"I'm sorry we had to do that." David patted Jacob's shoulder. They decided to untie him shortly after Chloe gave away the only leverage they had. He wondered what they could've discovered if she hadn't told Jacob the truth. "We just couldn't risk anything. Not after Rachel."
"I understand," Jacob answered with a nod, and he did, he truly did. He knew he would've done the same thing. They only had two options, and they had chosen the wrong one. Jacob couldn't bear to look David in the eyes. The fear of him discovering the truth was enough to send him over the edge. He needed to get that book, but Jacob knew he couldn't just ask for it. Operation Gain Back What Was Lost. OGBWWL. The worst game plan name ever.
"Chloe's still shaken up over the whole thing."
"I can only imagine."
"Maybe you should talk to her."
"She probably needs a little alone time," Jacob replied. He didn't want to have to face her; Jacob knew he couldn't lie to her face. Not again, not ever. She deserved better. "I'll go to her in a little bit."
David nodded in agreement before grabbing Jacob's knee cap and giving it a small shake. "We really are sorry."
"I know," Jacob said. "And I am too."
"You have nothing to be sorry for," David assured him, rising to his feet and going back to his room, leaving Jacob alone in his own four walled cell. Collin's crib was gone, but he knew Collin was already back. Margaret had been holding him after the interrogation, at least he was safe, and surprisingly, he hadn't cried much if any.
Jacob played David's words over and over, you have nothing to be sorry for. He shook his head and laid back on the bed. "Oh yes I do, yes I do."
