Burn (Chapter 16)

"She thinks she is strong, she believes that her friends are there for her. I pray she realizes before its to late."

A new day. New, a thing that is pure. I hope that is what today is, a day I won't have to deal with Sam. A pure day, god that is what I want it to be. It won't though I can feel it, it's like I know something is coming. Something larger than Sam and his petty workers. Well, only one way to see I guess.

Moving slightly to get up, I feel the coldness of the sheets. I remember the state of last night, Ace, where is he? I grab my phone out from underneath my pillow and see I have a new message. 'I went to get some "black like my soul" coffee. Be back by 7.' I smile at my phone, he knows me to well. Just think, a little while I hated him with every fiber in my body.

I look at the clock and see I have around 10 minutes, should be able to be ready by then considering my speed. Unplugging my phone from the cord, I stand up and walk to my closet. Sliding the cheap black curtain that hides my clothes aside, I find exactly what I was looking for. Black ripped jeans and a long sleeve deep dark red crop top that will show my belly button piercing.

Speed walking to the bathroom with my clothes in hand, I set them on the counter and do my daily routine shower. My hair up in a towel, changing completed, I look at my phone to see I have 5 minutes. Smiling, which I've been doing a lot more I might add, I put on some mascara and slide my silver belly button piercing into place, as well as my pure black stud in my nose. Placing my watch and rings on since I don't have to worry about my tattoo showing with my long-sleeve. Unwrapping the towel carefully, I blow dry my hair and let it just flow on my shoulders.

Returning to the tiny studio I call home, I make my bed and put away some clean dishes, making sure my room is back to its normal perfection. "Damn Kat, I was trying to be back before you got up." Smiling, I turn around to see Ace looking as hot as ever. His hair barely showing from under his dark grey beanie, he stands there in front of me holding two steaming hot cups of coffee. How did I get so lucky? "Miss me?" He smirked.

"Not really, well I mean I missed my coffee." I reply smirking slightly. Immediately he puts down the cups and walks towards me, smirking all the while. While walking toward me, I started to back up until I was pinned between the counter and him. Ace put his hands on my hips were my stomach shows, and pulled me closer to him.

"Are you sure you didn't miss me?" Me being me, shook my head, saying that no I didn't miss him, which is so far from the truth. "Really?" Smirking fully now, I put my arms around his neck, and kiss him.

I felt him smile into the kiss, when he tried to deepen it, I pulled away smiling more. "I think someone actually missed me."

He smiled slightly, "Your right I did miss you, who wouldn't though?" I smiled, about to reach up and kiss him again when I feel it, it was like my blood changed in a way. The air, it shifted, it felt like I just gained another sense, like I just got 10x as much power.

I took a deep breath and when I opened my eyes I saw something I've never seen before. Well, a someone more like it.

A tiny girl that looked to be in around 7 appeared right in front of my front door. She had short blonde hair, wearing a dark blue tank top and white jeans. I shoved Ace away as soon as I saw her and ran to her like a normal would, I didn't want to scare her with super speed immediately.

She stood straight and didn't seem to be worrying about a thing. I kneeled in front of her and then she spoke, "Where am I?" She sounded like she had been without water for days.

I looked over my shoulder to see Ace coming behind me with a bottle of water. I looked back at the little girl and spoke in the nicest voice I could muster. "My names Kat, this is my home. The guy over there is Ace, would you like to sit down?" She nodded and I walked her over to my couch.

Ace sat next to her on the other side and handed her the bottle. She opened it and took a couple sips, and then started coughing. I patted her back and helped her sit up.

She looked at me gratefully and tried again. After sipping the water for awhile she whispered a small "Devon".

I smiled at her and replied with, "Hello Devon, it's nice to meet you. Do you have a family we can take you too?" As soon as I mentioned her family she sprung up from the seat and stared at us shaking her head over and over.

"No, please. Don't take me back there! Please, I'll do anything! Just please." By the end she was on the verge of crying. Abuse, that was my first thought. I mean I went through it once too. Ace went to get up and help her but she just started to shake more.

I looked at him making sure we had eye contact and shook my head. "Devon, your safe here, we won't take you back there. Your safe here." By the end she was balling her eyes out.

"T-th-thank y-you." I smiled and hugged her. I hugged her like she was my only family. Like she was my own daughter, because I knew how it felt to be scared, to be unwanted. I would never wish that on anyone.

Me and Ace made eye contact, it was like we were seeing each other for the first time, he looked at me like I was the only person in the world. Like he was reassuring me that I had him, like I had him for the rest of my life, which honestly might not be for long.

Devon stopped shaking, I looked down to see her staring up at me. "Are you okay?"

She frowned and looked at her arms. I frowned and got what she was trying to say, her bruises should be there, they weren't though. None, no sign of any damage anywhere.

"Honey, I hate asking, but did they hurt you anywhere else?" She looked down again and nodded her head.

Ace sighed sadly, like he was in pain, as he stood up walking towards me. He whispered so softly in my ear, "I'm gonna go to your room Kat. Be careful with her, I love you." After that he kissed my check and walked away, I barely processed what he said before he was gone, and if this was any other circumstances I would have rushed after him and replied back with the same, but they aren't and I have a fragile little girl in my arms. I sighed and picked her up sitting her on my bed.

She looked down at the floor boards, "Devon, I'm gonna turn around, you take your time okay. Don't feel rushed sweetie, okay?" Once she nodded her head I turned around and wanted to cry. I wanted to cry so badly, I wanted Ace to hold me and tell me everything is okay. I want Devon to have never have went through this.  I heard a small gasp and turned around. Her legs were clean, they were the same color as her caramel arms.

I walk towards her and kneeled beside her quietly. She pulled up her pants and wrapped her arms around her tiny legs and stared into the distance. "They said this would happen, why now, why here." She murmured.

She slowly turned to me, "Kat can I show you something?" I nodded my head. "This thing has never been on me before now, do you know what it is?" She pulled up her right pant leg and lifted it and there it was. A mark, the mark. The mark that changes your fate. Devon has one. Devon has an ability.
