Chapter Three.

"I just have to check on my day watcher first before we head out." Noah said as they walked into the hospital. Noah's wound was already healed, Ashton noted from how he didn't struggle to walk like before.

Ashton was eager to go looking for his niece but he knew he had to be patient. He just had to pray that Cammy was okay. She was the only family he had. He couldn't lose her.

"Okay."

He followed dutifully as Noah led him through the hospital hallways and to a ward room.

"Hey Benny, how are you feeling?" Noah asked the guy on the bed. He was a small blonde man in glasses.

"Noah," he tried sitting up but Noah pushed him back down. "Don't. You'll hurt yourself. You have to rest."

"But who'll take care of you when you sleep." He said looking at him with concern. Noah turned looking at Ashton.

"You don't have to worry about that. It seems like I'll be going for a field trip for some time, so you have enough time to rest and heal."

They seemed to be really close. It's expected since vampires choose people they extremely trust to be their day watchers. Ashton stood away afraid of intruding on their privacy.

"This is Ashton," he turned back to the two when his name was mentioned. "He's my travel buddy."

Ashton smiled lightly and waved in greeting. "Nice to meet you." Benny nodded and turned back to Noah.

"Be safe. Come back alright and don't forget to call."

"I wouldn't. I have to make sure you're taking care of yourself. Okay I have to go before the sun rises." Noah ruffled his hair and walked to the door. "Don't give the nurses a hard time."

"Yeah. Bye."

They rode on Noah's motorcycle to a wooden apartment just twenty minutes away. Ashton stared at it wearily before walking through the door.

"Hey don't expect much. I'm a vampire can't work day. This is all I could afford."

It really wasn't that great. Not exactly what I'm used to. Yeah I'm kind of rich, so...

"How did it happen?"

"What?"

"What else? The kidnapping?"

"Oh that," he raked his fingers through his hair. "Cammy had gone to a friend for a sleep over. She had her nanny and two guards with her. They were attacked on the way there. Both guards were killed and the nanny gravelly injured. She's the one who told me what happened before she died."

"What about her parents?"

He sighed sitting on the only couch in the room as Noah sat on the bed.

"It's just the two of us. It's been the two of us for a while now."

Noah frowned taking off his shoes so he could get comfortable on the bed. "What do you mean?"

"Her parents are dead. I've been her legal guardian since she was two years old. I'm all she has and she's all I've got."

Noah nodded in understanding. "Don't worry slick, we'll find her. As long as we do it my way."

"Okay."

"I'm serious. Whatever I say goes. I can't have you get us killed."

Ashton nodded to show he understood. "I'm all in. I just need Cammy back."

"Okay slick. Now I have to get some shut eye before we head out tonight. See you at sunset." he got in between the sheets and was asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow. Ashton couldn't understand how someone could fall asleep so fast. He was probably tired from all he'd done the previous night.

He rubbed his face. He was exhausted but he couldn't sleep. Just thinking about his family and how he'd lost them. He can't lose Cammy too. His species are extinct. His parents were killed by hunters, leaving him and his brother. They went into hiding but they let down their guards at the wrong time.

Years later when they were celebrating Cammy's second birthday they were attacked. Vampires drained his brother and his wife while Ashton barely managed to escape with Cammy. Since then it's just been the two of them.

That's the reason why he doesn't feel all warm and fuzzy with vampires. His species blood is stronger than any other and that's why vampires hunt them . But they're very strong when they've matured that's the reason why they took Cammy and not him.

Ashton just hopped she was still alive.

He closed his eyes drifting to sleep. He didn't want to be a hindrance when night came and their search began. He's sure he chose the right person for the the job. With that he drifted into a restless sleep.
