"Gordan! Ready to go?" bellows The Boss.

"Been ready," I shot back at him.

I run my hand through my hair, trying to get use to the new extensions. The Society made me switch out my boyish crop for long wavy hair. The locks delicately frame my face, enhancing my misty gray eyes,  giving me this sweet, angelic appeal. The Boss said my new look made me "easy on the eyes". I, however, find the new locks annoying and unsuitable.

My cover is a 17 year old girl who is going to a new school due to her father's job transfer. The Society hired actors to play my parents and arranged for me to have all the same classes as Parker Smith. I'm perfect for this mission. I get to infiltrate into his life and watch his every move. Because of him, because of this case, my mother was taken away from me. I can't forgive him for doing that. These last 10 years have been a living hell. It's time I had my fun with his life.

My vengeance must have leaked onto my face because The Boss looked at me disapprovingly. He put his hand on my head and ruffled my hair playfully. I hate it when he does that. Does he still think I'm some child? I'm a Polynatural that is ranked in the top of The Society. Not just some average teenager.

"Lacey...this isn't for revenge. This case is of a serious degree. You know that you are the only one suited for this."

"Of course, all the adults disappeared, so now they put a teenager on this job." I spoke with a sarcastic bitterness for The Boss still continued to talk to me in the same patronizing tone.

The Boss heaves a sigh. He knows that I hate it when he treats me like a kid.

"Don't screw this up."

I scoff. "Screw up? When does Lacey Gordan screw up? Oh yeah, never."

"I'm serious Lacey. We don't need you disappearing as well. You're one of the best we've ever had, and you know that. So stop getting a big head and concentrate on the mission!"

He throws me his most serious look. I only snicker back.

"Don't worry Boss, I always take my missions seriously."

And with that, I lightly jog to my ride, and leave him standing there.

He needs to lighten up. I'm not going to disappear. My actions are always meticulous and thought out. He worries too much, especially about me. Ever since I was adopted into The Society, he's been the one that's looked after me, almost like a dad. I appreciate it, but I'm not a kid anymore. I wish he would just loosen up and realize I'm mature, and I can make my own decisions. I don't need someone holding my hand and guiding me along the way. I can take care of myself. The position that I was forced into made me this way, and I'm glad. I don't need someone's shoulder to lean on; I've got two of my own.

"Here you go Lacey," says the driver as he hands me a file. It's a brief on the case.

"No thanks," I reply coolly. I know exactly what I need to do for this mission. I've been waiting my whole life to be put on this case. I'm ready.

The car pulls up to the high school, and I survey the surrounding. I've never been to a real school before. Of course The Society does offer school like classes, but I chose to train my abilities instead. I took a few of those classes when I was younger, but dropped them immediately when my mother disappeared. That's when I chose the path to improve my skills and dedicate my life to being a top agent. But seriously, how hard can it be? It's just high school. I've battled time bombs, grenades, psychopaths and much worse. Yet, my hands still clam up at the thought of high school. I wipe them on my jeans and walk towards the building.

As I make my way down the crowded hallways, things become oddly silent. Loud voices become hushed whispers. I can't help but make a crooked smirk. My raven black, wavy hair cascades behind my shoulders as I walk. Judging by their faces, everyone is thinking the same thing, "Who is she?" "Is she new?" "Wow, she's pretty." I replace my smirk with a warming smile, trying to hide the hint of my arrogance and amusement. Humans are so simple.
