"Hey Lacey," Parker spoke warmly as he walks towards me. The crowd in the school hallway parts like the red sea as Parker walks down,
"Uhh...Hey..?"
"What's up? You look kind of tired."
"Oh yeah...I was, uh, up unpacking..."
"Yeah? Well if you need any help, I don't mind lending a hand."
"...oh, that's fine. I finished last night..."
"That's good. You can get some sleep tonight."
"Yeah..."
"Hey, listen, about yesterday. I wasn't...exactly myself...I didn't uh, feel too well."
"Oh, well do you feel better today?"
"Definitely." He flashes his perfect smile at me. "Come on, we'll be late for first period."
I nod my head in response and follow behind.
Just as we sit down in our seats, Parker asks, "So what was the pencil twirling stuff yesterday?" I detect a hint of caution in his tone.
"Oh that? Just something I use to do a lot as a kid."
"Where'd you learn it?" He continues to press.
"Oh uh...I uh...I played the drums as a kid."
"Really? You don't seem like the drummer type."
"Appearances are deceiving, Parker."
No really, he was right. I don't play the drums. I just wanted him to buy my excuse.
"You know, you should swing by my band sometime, we'd love to hear you play."
"Oh no no, I don't play anymore. I'm probably awful right now." I leaked a little bit of nervousness into my speech. I hope he didn't notice.
He raises an eyebrow, half doubting my story.
"Well that's too bad. You should still swing by though. We play at Pulse every Friday night."
"Pulse?"
"Yeah, it's like a club. You should come, everyone goes. It's a lot of fun. Plus, I'll be there." He finishes with a cocky smirk.
Wow, does he think his charm will work on me. It might work on the rest of the girls, but I'm definitely not just a mere pathetic human.
"I'll see." I respond a little too coldly.
Dissatisfied with my response, he slightly purses his lips and averts his attention to Miss Mia's lecture.
The rest of the day turned out a lot better than the first. We actually joked around and talked like friends, unlike the cold, distant treatment he had given me before. I began to see why all the girls in the school were crazy about him. All-star athlete: quarterback in football and captain in soccer and lacrosse, lead guitarist/singer, killer charms and a body like an Abercrombie and Fitch model, and to top it off, he comes from a wealthy family. I can honestly say he is almost Mr. Perfect. I can't blame all the girls for liking him. But as far as I go, he's just a mission to me. Nothing more.
Speaking about my mission...the basic task is a simple one. Just watch Parker Smith and keep an eye on the issue of previous disappearances. However, this mission is more than just that to me. I want to find my mom. Sure, it's been 10 years since I've last seen her, but I haven't given up. I don't want to give up. The Society gave up on looking for her after a few years. No one knows what happened to her. One day she was here, and then the next, she was gone. She just disappeared. Everyone tells me I should give up and just accept that my mother is gone and won't come back. I can't accept that. I know she's out there...somewhere. I may not know where, but as cheesy as it sounds, I still feel like she's here...always watching over me...At the bottom of my heart, I know I will find her. I have to. My mission isn't just about watching Parker; it's about finding my mother. There's a lot at stake here.
