Chapter 33

My short forgetfulness shortly washes over me. Everything that had happened hit my head, hard. I want to be thrown back into the utter darkness of ignorance. Ugh, Brody's still holding onto me, making sure I'm okay, sweet, but under these circumstances, not really. I shove him off as I stand up. "Whoa," I say as I almost fall back into the wall. My head still throbs slightly, making me feel woozy. Brody stands up, offering his aid to help me. The female gazes onto him disapprovingly. I reject his aid and walk over to the cage holding  Parker and The Boss. Normally, I would be freaking out, but at this point, I have a sense of what is to come, no use to thrash about. I've been through similar situations before, in fact too many. Also a vast number of movies incorporated this similar situation, its really lame, honestly. They are obviously pulling the "let's get me to agree by threats and putting the lives of the ones I care about in jeopardy", just classic. In the handbook, lesson one addressed this. Theorem 1.5 states: If the ones closest to you are being used against you, you must think of a way out instead of fight your way out. A common rookie mistake is to look for loopholes and a way to get out. That would be the same as gambling their lives for an unsure success.

What should I do? Like the theorem states, loopholes? Not a chance. Even if I somehow managed to find one, they would come back to get me and possibly be put in the same situation, or worse. The only thing I could do now is comply to what they want me to do.. I don't want to, but right now this isn't about me anymore. Parker and The Boss are at stake. If I don't agree, who knows what the Divames will do to them...It's not worth the risk, or the pain. I have to comply, I don't have a choice. There is no other plan.

"Look, I know what you guys want, so let's talk through this rationally."

"Excellent choice. So you will do the deed?" spoke the female elder.

"If you let us freely leave?"

"Yes."

"Okay. I agree."

"Excellent, sign your name with blood for it to mean something."

"Wait wait, Lacey, what are you doing?" asks Parker.

"Theorem 1.5," I reply. I look towards The Boss and he nods his head in understanding.

"What?" Parker replies confusingly.

"What do you have to do?" asks The Boss.

"Birth."

"Wait, what? Lacey what do you mean? I'm confused." Parker's voice raises slightly as he spoke that.

I look towards him painstakingly. His eyes filled with worry and confusion, making mine want to water.

"Parker, I need to give birth in order to free us all." I shakily say as the tears start to resurface.

"What do you mean?"

"Look, I'll explain to you later, right now is not the time."

"Lacey...don't do it..."

"I have to."

"No, you don't, you don't have to."

"Yes I do."

"We'll be fine Lacey, don't----"

"Just stop Parker!" I interrupt. "It's as hard as it is, I don't need you to be making it harder."

"Just think it through, we'll fight through it, you don't need to make this your responsibility."

"Fight? And what, cause another bloody battle? No. Furthermore, I'm predestined to this, as much as I don't want to admit it..."

"Lacey..."

I walk away as my name lingers behind me.

"Brody, I want to do your plan," I say to him as I approach.

"His plan?" The female elder questions.

"You haven't said anything to her about it?" My eyebrows furrow as I ask him the obvious answer.

"Not yet..." He uncomfortably says. He then directs his gaze to the female elder as they speak via telepathically.

"I see, 5 years?"

"Yes." I reply.

"Honestly, this isn't up to me, it's up to Broduex entirely. Brodeux, do you think you can suppress your dark side for another 5 years?"

"I'll manage."

The female elder continues to stare at Brody, not entirely sure of his response.

"I'll manage." He repeats more confidently.

"Okay, well that's settled then, Lacey...sign your name."

"Where?" I ask.

"Bring the parchment." She orders the subordinate beside her.

I pick up the nearest shard and bring it to my finger, prepared to prick it.

"Let me," spoke the female elder.

Instead of taking the shard as I thought she would she brings it to her lips. I feel a tiny incision into my skin and a small suckle of my blood.

"Hmm, I can taste the Divames and human sides to your blood, interesting mix, indeed."

I pull my finger away and place it on the parchment, signing my name in the red liquid. Seemingly, the Divames all draw near, curious of my blood, but with the raise of the female elder's hand, they recede to their prior stations.

"Now, release the captives," she demands.

The Divames nod accordingly and face their attention to the two cages.

Slowly the mound of earth dissolves into tiny, fine, grain like substances and falters to the ground. It ends up being a mound piled high of sand; it reminds me of the bottom of an hourglass. The Boss and Parker, now free from captivity, walk towards me. The Boss tries to manage a supporting grin on his face, but I can tell it's not genuine. While Parker looks towards me glumly and disappointedly. I merely shrug my shoulders at them, for what I did was for them. The Elders create a mound of stairs for us as we exit the hallway. I look back to see them all smiling, smiling as if they had just won the battle. Victory is in their hands.
