Length: around 950 words.
Charcters Involved: Nico di Angelo, Kelly Winton (my own character)
Extra Comments: I rlly like Kelly as a character, so she might appear in more of these.
"You need to get dressed for the party, sweetheart," your parent said from the doorway of your room. "Wear the dress I got you for your birthday!"
"No thanks, I want to wear this!" You replied, holding up a pair of jeans and a nice dress shirt.
"No, put on the dress, or don't bother coming at all!"
"Unfair!" You screamed, throwing a folder against the wall of your bedroom.
"Y/N, I expect you to act like a lady, and this is the complete opposite!" Your parent said sternly, a pissed off frown on their face.
You turned to stare your parent down, a hurt look in your wide eyes. "I don't feel like a girl, so that's why I don't act like it!"
Your parent refused to respond, simply turning away from the room and slamming the door behind them.
You were so done. Packing up the few masculine clothing items you could find, you snuck out your bedroom window and took off into the night.
---
At two in the morning, the last thing Kelly Winton expected to hear was a tapping on her window. Groggily, she threw her black/white/gray/purple duvet off and opened up the window.
"Y/N?" She yawned, rubbing her eyes. "Next time use the freaking door, kay?"
She didn't even question the fact that her friend showed up in the middle of the night with a bag of clothes, she just offered up her bed and went to crash on the couch.
---
"Thanks for letting me stay here," you murmured gratefully the next morning over breakfast.
"It's no problem," she smiled, leaning forward in her chair. "So, what changed? Like, pronouns, name, gender identity, what?"
You gave her a look. "Don't be stupid, Kells, nothing really changed. Just, he/him pronouns, and I'm a boy, you can still call me by my real name, but at school and stuff call me (your male name, or y/m/n)."
"Okay, but, do you still like boys or what?" She asked bluntly, rolling her brown eyes.
"Kinda, yeah," you shrugged, finishing off your glass of juice.
"Cool."
And that was that.
---
The next day was Monday, so Kelly drove her beat up car to school just so you wouldn't have to ride the bus.
Sunday night, the best friend in the world, aka Kelly, gave you an awesome haircut, as well as her brother's old clothes for you to wear.
"I ordered you a couple binders," she remarked as she pulled into the school parking lot. "That way you don't get really desperate and try to use ACE bandages. Those can really hurt you, y/m/n."
You gave her yet another look, offended that she even thought you would do that. "I'm not that desperate, I promise you. And you really didn't have to order them, let me pay you back."
"No way, it's a gift. You're like the annoying little brother I never had, but now you're staying with me so I guess you are my little brother of sorts." Kelly had a tendency to ramble, as displayed.
You rolled your eyes as you got out of the car, but the smiling your lips showed your happiness that Kelly was getting everything right.
"Look at me, mister, just because these aren't your normal clothes doesn't mean you can have them looking like this." She locked the car then rushed over to you and straightened up your clothes.
"Whatever, mom," you sassed, rolling those eyes yet again.
She ignored your comment, giving you a cursory glance. "Yep, ten out of ten, would bang, if I wasn't asexual, that is."
---
When you walked into school, everyone was staring. Kelly lead you to the office so you could alert the staff to your name change.
"Hey, y/m/n, can you handle this? I've got another friend having a crisis, I need to help them."
"Go on, Kells." You nodded.
"Thank you!" She called, muttering something about hetero-problems and Frank Zhang as she walked away.
After a few minutes, the no e lady in the office told you that you could go on to class, so you left.
And that was one of the worst decisions you could make.
Just then, a big moron of a guy pushed you up against a locker. "What happened, y/n? Why are you dressing like a fucking tranny?"
"It's y/m/n, jerk-off. Why are you dressing like someone who'll spend the rest of their life in their mom's basement?" Your words were a bit harsh, but you had a right to speak like that.
Just as the moron pulled his arm back to presumably punch you in the face, he was tugged off by a kid who was probably two feet shorter and twenty pounds underweight. "Leave him alone, asshole."
"Fuck off, di Angelo!" The kid snarled, but the so called di Angelo boy punched him in the face, so hard you could hear the impact.
di Angelo left the idiot laying on the ground and walked over to you. He put out his hand, shooting you a somewhat gloomy smile. "Name's Nico."
You shook his hand, nodding. "Y/m/n. Thanks for that, by the way. I'm rather new to fistfights."
"No problem. Dickheads like that deserve to be knocked out." Nico shot you a small smile. "Speaking of, we should probably move away from him before he comes to."
---
Over the next few months, Nico became a new addition to your group. He was super friendly around you, which was a startling change in behavior according to Kelly and the source of many "hetero problems" as she put it, Frank Zhang and Hazel Levesque.
Finally, it was a week or so before prom. You didn't have a date, and if all else failed you planned on taking Kelly as a friend.
