Glimmer: A Hunger Games Fanfic

Chapter 1

I was born to kill. It's not the first thing you want to read at the beginning of a story but it's true. I was raised to kill others from different districts. To bring glory to my district. If I don't bring that glory, my family will be put in shame and I will NOT let that happen. My younger sisters, Satin and Ivory, don't need to grow up in that shame, it'll break both of them, for sure.

"Earth to Glimmer," my friend, Aquamarine, was saying waving her knife in my face that brought me back from my never ending thoughts. "You were thinking about the reaping today, weren't you?"

I picked up my mace from the floor, "Maybe I was, maybe I wasn't."

Aqua gave me a hard look, "Yeah right. It's plastered all over your face."

"Okay, maybe I was," I admitted, throwing the mace at a dummy 25 feet away from me. "I mean what if my name gets called today? What if I die and put my family in shame? I just don't want to do that to Ivory or Satin. Especially to Satin, she is already having a bad time in training. I just don't want to bring dishonor to my family! It'll break her for sure!"

Aqua threw her dagger at a dummy, hitting exactly in the middle of the target before she answered, " Well you'll win of course. Don't doubt yourself, Glimmer. It'll just get you dead in the games, even if you do get picked today."

Her comment made me smile. She's right of course. I need to stop doubting myself. I'll easily win. The lower districts will be easy to wipe out. All I have to worry is the male tribute from my district and District 2's tributes. "Good point. Let's just get back to what we were doing." Aqua smiles and throws her knife. It almost cuts one of our classmates ear and hits a dummy right behind him.

Aqua and I practice hard for another hour and then decided to quit for the night. It was time to get ready for the reaping. We looked around the room wondering if this was our last time practicing in here. But we couldn't afford to think that and left the building with our head held high.

"Well hello, ladies," Someone wraps their arms around Aqua and my shoulders.

"You got the count of three to get your hands off of us, Bronze. One. Two." Aqua started counting.

Bronze takes his arms off of us but I took hold of one of his arms and placed it on my shoulder again, "No! I like it when he had his arms on us!" I teased.

"Oh you do?" Bronze smiled, his teeth brighter than the sun, hugged me tighter.

Aqua said no as I said yes. We looked at each other and smirked. "So are you ladies excited for the reaping tonight?" Bronze asked, taking his arm off of me.

"Depends if you want to kill people for fun." Aqua says. Her eyes had a glazed, almost lustful look that said she really wanted to go into the Games.

"Oh I do!" Bronze protested, "Let's see if I can finally be able to volunteer this year. That jerk from last year didn't deserve to go."

" Well if my name gets called this year, I'll throw a knife at anyone who volunteers." I say, using one finger to go across my throat.

"Beautiful and dangerous. I likey, " Bronze jokes and I just playfully punched his arm.

Aqua just rolls her eyes and says,"Seems like a good plan, Glim, but where are you going to hide all those knives?"

"I'll think of something."

We talked for awhile and then decided that it was enough with the pleasantry and left to go to our homes to get ready for the reaping. My house was located in the middle of District 1. My family was middle class and our house was beautiful. It was built out of white marble and had Greek pillars in the front. Above those pillars was a balcony that led out of my room. I loved that balcony. I had so many Romeo and Juliet moments there. It was my place to go think or relax with a good book in my hand. My place to go away from the world for just a little bit. I opened the doors to my house and saw Ivory all dressed up in a white fluffy dress that had a glitterly sash around her tiny waist, her dark hair curled and pinned back with a diamond- covered bow. It was going to be her second reaping and she already had that mischievious look on her face. "Already to beat up people, Ivory?" I asked the little snot.

"Got a problem with that, Glimmer? I already heard that you were willing to kill people if they asked to volunteer in your place. That is, if you get picked today."

"How did you hear of that already?" I asked puzzled. It was about twenty-five minutes ago when I even said that. For some reason when she said this, it bothered me.

"I got my resources," she smirks while putting on her silver pumps.

"And is one of those resources be a certain boy who happen to be in a 'relationship with you?" I questioned as I hung up my fleece jacket in the closet under the stairway. Ivory was one of the fifteen dark haired girls in District 1 (which is rare because all of us District 1 people all have fair hair) and she had way too many suitors already. She was only thirteen, for god's sake and she treated them like clothes. They would be in fashion and then after a few days, they were thrown away. Not worthy of her affection. I know I had my fair share of guys already, but I wouldn't treat them like that.

"Maybe it was and maybe it wasn't, " Ivory snapped back, "But are you willing to kill your own sister, if I volunteer?"

I was climbing the stairs when she said that and I missed a step, almost landing on my face. What? Did she really just ask that question? I may not like my sister at times but she's still my sister. I wouldn't kill her. But I have seen people who had been called and their family member would step out to volunteer. But the person who was called would throw a knife that they hid and kill their brother or sister on the spot. For them it was district over blood. They thought it was the most honorable thing to do for the family. It's sickened me.

I threw a look at my sister, "You know where my loyalties lie." and I climbed the stairs to my room with my heart heavy. I will not kill Ivory but if she does volunteer, she'll get easily killed like the lower districts. Bringing even more shame onto the family. I cannot let that happen. I just can't. I opened the door to my room and quickly closed it. I crossed over to my music player, scrolled down the song list, and touched the song I wanted to hear. It was a song that was made before Panem was made into a nation and before the world broke out in bloodshed and hatred. It's titled Safe and Sound by Taylor Swift.
