Glimmer: A Hunger Games Fanfic

Chapter 9

I remember the first day when I went to Snow Training Academy (STA) when I was about five years old. They taught us gymnastics, the first thing they wanted you to accomplish, which was my absolute favorite thing throughout my training career but not at first. I remember when they first taught a cart wheel and I landed straight on face. I felt so humiliated. I wanted to cry so badly but I didn't want to be viewed as the class crybaby. Then here comes Aqua doing a cartwheel perfectly. I instantly hated her. I was so jealous that when we were partnered together, I didn't even try talking to her. I ignored her completely.

"Glimmer!" One of the instructors called me over. I stood up from the ground, my nose in the air, and started walking over to the her.

"Yes?" I asked, crossing my arms.

"Jealousy is a bad trait,"The woman started off.

I looked at her as if she was crazy. I may have been five but I was pretty smart for for my age. "I don't know what you are talking about."

She shook her head. "Jealousy will be your downfall if you get into the Games."

I scoffed. Yeah right.

The woman instructor looked at me with pity. "Well at least try to be nice to your partner. You want to get better, no?"

I nodded, not looking at her. My pride was to great.

"Let her help you. You'll get better and no one will look down at you."

I considered words. She was perhaps right. I thanked her for 'wise' words and walked over back to Aqua.

I thrust my hand towards her," Hi, I'm Glimmer."

"So you are now being civil?" Aqua says, crossing her arms. She eyes my waiting hand and scoffed.

I dropped my hand and crossed my arms as well. "Look at the one talking."

" Why should I be kind to you if you were also was rude?"

I rolled my eyes," Fine. Sorry. Can you just help me?"

"Nope" she said popping the p.

I stared her down. She was going to be a challenge. I liked challenges."Okay, so if I run five rounds around this gym faster than you, you'll help me," I gave my own challenge, " If you run faster than me, I'll give you my diamond bracelet that's in my bag."

Aqua weighed her options and finally agreed with my terms. I smiled. I was the fastest girl in my neighborhood. Aqua had no chance. We went to the other side of the gym. We lunged low, ready to run the laps. I counted down from three and we started sprinting. We ran neck to neck which made me frustrated. I was going to win this. At the last round, we were still running neck to neck. I tried running faster so I could get at least ahead of her, but I could go so fast. That's how we ended. Tied.

"Three dollars?" I panted.

"To help you?" She asked. I nodded. "Deal."

That's how Aqua and I became friends. I missed those old days.

I replayed the memory in my mind while I sat on a bench in the Greenhouse. It was my second night here.

As my thoughts dwell on the instructor, a new thought popped in my head that I never noticed before. That instructor was right. When Aqua helped me and I helped her, we became the top of our class and come to think of it, we were the only ones helping each other out. Whatever happened to that instructor though? I only remember seeing her that one day. .

Whatever happened to her?

"I thought I would see you here," a voice behind me said. I turned around to see Xavier.

I smiled,"This is the second night in a row where you have snuck up behind me. Be grateful to know that you are still alive."

He chuckled as he sat next down to me. "Beautiful and dangerous."

I blushed. I was called that many times but this time I had butterflies in my stomach. "Only in your dreams." I tease back.

"I'll count on it." There was an awkward pause before he said something again," So what were you thinking about when I came in?"

"The good times when I was little."

"Can I hear the story?"

I chuckled,"It's kinda boring. I don't think you want to hear it."

"I will never know until you tell me."

I took a deep breath and told him the story of my first day at STA. he chuckled at some parts and just listened to me talk. It felt nice to have a friend to talk to.

When I was finish with the story he asked," Is that like what it is in the training room today."

"Like what?"

"To help each other out?"

I thought about his words and replayed the day in my mind. "No. Well most of the lower districts helped each other out. But us upper districts flaunted our stuff off."

"Why is that?"

"So we teach the lower districts not to mess with us. Is that bad?"

"You tell me."
