Glimmer: A Hunger Games Fanfic
Chapter 2
Just close your eyes The sun is going down You'll be alright No one can hurt you now Come morning light You and I'll be safe and sound.
I let the words come in slowly. This was the only time I could show weakness. In my own bedroom. You see, if you were seen weak here in District 1... well let's just say it's not a good thing. I took my pearl hairbrush and combed out the knots in my hair. With each stroke I breathed in and out, calming myself. I shouldn't doubt myself. I will get into the Games today. I will. I keep repeating this over and over in my head until I believe it. I laid my brush on my vanity, and crossed over to my closet. I grabbed my reaping dress that I had just bought yesterday and carefully took it out of its wrapping. It was just perfect. It had a heart-shaped neckline, strapless, and it ended middle of my thigh. The color was a deep cream, had sparkles on the edges of the hemlines, and was made out of the softest satin. After I put it on, I went over my dresser and opened the drawer that held all my weapons. I took a few of my daggers and hid them under my skirt with a belt that was strapped on my upper thigh. I felt its cold metal pressed against my soft skin and wondered if I was going to use them. Will one these knives kill one of my classmates or worse. Someone from my family.
"Welcome to the reaping of the 74th Hunger Games!" Annette Teak said over the loudspeaker, her capitol accent filling our ears. Annette was wearing a gold metallic unitard that was way to low cut, leather leggings, and gold knee high boots. Her hair was a dark purple and was held back with a golden tiara." Please turn your eyes toward the big screen to your left to watch a video clip sent all the way from the Capitol!"
A ripple of excitement went through the crowd and everyone whooped as the first note of the anthem played on the video. I smiled as it played. It was the same video like every year and it was still as thrilling. When the video ended the whole crowd burst out with shouts of glory like an army about to go to war. Everyone was willing to die and to kill for the Capitol and most importantly - our district.
Annette waited for the crowd to calm down before she started talking again. "Let's get on with the reaping. Ladies first!" she says with much enthusiasm and heads over to the bowl that held the girls names. My heart beats faster and my palms get sweaty. The girls around me shift their weight, hoping that their names will be called. It seemed like a lifetime until Annette grabbed one of those slips of paper and headed over back to the microphone . She opened the slip of paper and everything went quiet, everyone on their toes waiting to hear for the female tribute's name.
"Ivory Lavenderhill." Annette's voice rang out. Wait. Di-did I hear that right. I looked at my sister with her dark curls bouncing and heard the click clack of her pumps hitting the cement as she speed walked toward the stage. I didn't hear anything else, my only focus was on her until she went on stage. Her white puffy skirt billowing in the wind, her heart shaped face dangerously smiling. Then Annette asks for volunteers and I finally remember how to move my feet. But what happens next, I barely remember because it went so fast. Another girl stepped out yelling that she volunteered, Ivory took out a dagger from her glittery sash on her waist and threw it at the girl who just volunteered. But that girl was quicker and before I knew it, blood surrounded the knife that was thrown at Ivory's heart. I quickly grabbed my knife underneath my dress, threw it at the girl who just killed my sister, I quickly said that I volunteered and ran up to the stage before my sister fell on the ground. I looked back at the girl who I threw my knife to. She laid on the cold cement floor with a pool of blood already coming out of her skull. Her lifeless eyes still had that surprised look on them.
"Glimmer?" she whispers, her Tiffany blue eyes looking at the sky as she laid in my trembling arms.
"I'm here," I say, putting my hand on her warm face.
"Win. For me."
"No! Don't leave me." I choked out, the tears streaming down my face. My sister and I may have our fights, but we still loved each other no matter what.
" Promise me." she says with much intensity that I promised her that I would. "I love you. Say goodbye to the family for me," she whispers and then she went limped against me.
"No. no. Come back to me, Ivory!" I say, slapping lightly on her face. No response. But I knew it was useless and laid her gently on the ground. I kissed her forehead and stood up, wiping the tears from my face.
"Your name?" Annette says, wiping tears away from her Crayola colored face.
I stood straight and put on a huge smile even though it hurts to do so, " Glimmer Lavenderhill."
"Now the gentlemen." Annette says. As she went to go the slip of paper, I looked over to my family. My mother was in my father's arms, bawling her eyes out, my father's face blank, and my little sister wondering why my parents were crying.
"Marvel Steelbound." Annette's voice rang out.
I looked as a boy who was really tall came out of the crowd with a huge grin on his face. He came on the stage and everyone shouted and screamed with excitement.
" Here I give you, Glimmer and Marvel, your district's tributes!" Annette says and crowd goes wild.
Next thing I knew we were wisked away and I didn't lose my smile until I was in a small room with my family in it.
