Glimmer: A Hunger Games Fanfic
Chapter 17
In the early light of the day, I arose quickly from the ground. I bent down at my waist to stretch out my back leg muscles and back groggily. I couldnt fall back to sleep from awakening from that nightmare. Everytime I tried closing my eyes, Ivory's ghastly appearance danced behind my lids. I tried to distract myself from my thoughts by listening to Peeta. He had started to cry softly after two hours I had woken up. I was going to try comfort him but I remembered that we were going to kill him after we had found Katniss. That we were just using him and that he was extra baggage. After I couldnt stand hearing him cry anymore, I tried listening to the night animals and birds that spoke during the night. It calmed my nerves a little bit and strangely made me feel almost at peace. It also made me think of the past when I was little. My father would set up some sleepingbags around a fire in my backyard once every month. He would bring out his guitar and my mother would sing us some folk songs while my father played. We would then cook something over the fire. It was just Ivory and me then, Satin wasnt even thought of. My parents thought that this nighttime thing in the backyard would help us in the games. Another training technique they would call it.
"Awake so soon?" Peeta asked when he saw that I was up. His face was looked like it was sunken in and a bruise sat on top of his left cheek. I could tell that he had lack of sleep. Without thinking I said,"Get some sleep. I'll watch." Realizing what I said, I mentally kicked myself and pushed him towards the circle where the others were sleeping. Peeta gave me a weird look but didnt questioned it. After a few minutes from laying his head down the ground, he fell asleep. I could tell though that he didnt want to from the way his muscles looked tight but fatigue had won the battle.
I sat on a boulder, watched the sky turn into an orange color. It was beautiful. How can an arena that was meant to kill people in create such beauty? It was painfully confusing.
Crack.
I quickly loaded the bow and aimed it where I heard the noise from. A girl with shiny straight brown hair looked at me fearfilled big eyes. From the looks of it, she had stepped on a twig she mustn't have seen. She just stood there like a frozen statue, waiting for me to make the kill. Images of the people I killed from my nightmare suddenly flashed through. My arms started to shake as I battled with my mind. Kill her it said while it was telling me that I shouldnt. What if she had a sister back home waiting for her? But then again I was going to win for Ivory's honor. Glory, strength, wit.. Finally I just let the arrow fly through the air. At first I didnt think it would hit her but it did. It hit her straight in the eye, peircing through to the back of her head. She fell to the ground with a thump and a cannon fired. An image of her joining my group of kills appeared and I bit my lip to erase it from my mind. I felt horrible and good at the same time. Right now I could see a family sobbing and now looked at me on the screen as if I was a monster. I kept my face motionless and tucked my hair behind my ears. I grabbed an apple from my sack and sat on top of the boulder like nothing happened as my mind raced with never ending thoughts. Be strong. Dont look weak. Whatever you do, dont look weak. If you look weak, you'll lose. No honor and you'll turn up dead.......but maybe you do deserve to die.
