Dedicated to another of my favourite readers <3

Zeph, Oakley, Matthew and I were standing in the front yard. Zeph and Oakley were wide eyed and Matthew looked thoughtful.

“What?” I asked. I had just come out of the woods after getting changed.

                “You…” Oakley began

                “You’re,” Zeph tried.

                “An alpha.”

I looked to Matthew who still looked lost in thought though he had just spoken. A hand rested on the back of his neck, touching the edge of his short brown hair.

“What?” I felt dizzy and confused from the shift.

A laugh sounded from the woods and the pack came trickling back into the front yard for lunch.

“So, how did our little rookie do?” Merlin asked coming to stand beside Matthew. Though Merlin was taller and older it was obvious that Matthew was in charge. I had just discovered the Alphas identity; I had yet to learn the other’s ranks.

“I don’t know if I would call her a rookie,” Matthew met my eyes.

                “What?” Merlin asked.

The pack gathered around in a makeshift circle. Confused glances shot around. Zeph and Oakley looked like they would burst if they couldn’t say what was on their mind. They knew that it was not their turn to talk though.

“Pack order is going to have to be re-established.” Matthew said still looking into my eyes.

Merlin took a confused step backward.

                “She’s an Alpha.”

Whispers and glances flew around the circle. Katie walked in late from the woods. She heard the last word and growled.

Something inside of me snapped. I was about to ready to explode. I’d had enough of her attitude towards me. I spun around to face her. My eyes narrowed as they connected with her dark brown eyes. She stood her ground, canines bared.

I felt my lips part as my teeth sharpened of their own accord. She was shooting daggers my way, I shot them right back. For what seemed an eternity we glared at each other. I could feel her begin to waver. A snarl erupted from her throat. I held my ground. This was instinct taking over.

Katie’s eyes flashed as she pulled her gaze from mine. Her eyes fell on the ground and she sprinted into the trees, shifting as she did. Whatever had just happened, I had won.

Shock seemed to crash over the pack. My stomach growled and my knees grew weak again. That moment of strength was long gone now. I stumbled forward. A hand grabbed my elbow to steady me. I looked over to see Matthew at my side. He helped me inside as the others stared after Katie in shock.

“What just happened,” I whispered as the others began to break free from their trance and head toward the door.

“We’ll talk later. Don’t worry about it for now. You need food.”
