After deciding to take a nap, I had gone back to my room. I woke several hours later, in the cool of the evening. The sun was setting, filling the lodge with shadows and golden light. Rolled out of bed and ran a brush through my hair. I wasn’t exactly sure what to do.

I wandered downstairs and into the living room, taking a seat on the leather couch. I sigh and relaxed, leaning against the back of the couch. A flood of feelings swept over me. I wasn’t sure which one to feel. A mix of lonely and hopeful seemed to win out.

I watched the sun set through the window of the entry way that was barely visible from the living room. I felt the couch sink down beside me. I looked over to see Matthew. He was watching the sun too.

We sat in silence watching the last of the sun dip behind the trees.

“Feeling homesick?” Matthew asked. With the words out of his mouth I realized that was exactly what I was feeling. I missed my home and was unsure what this new home would bring.

I nodded, turning my head to face him.

                “I know the feeling.”

“I thought… Oakley said everyone else had been born a werewolf except for us. Haven’t you always lived here?” I asked confused.

Matthew leaned back into the couch and faced me as he began to explain, “I have always lived here. But I feel homesick every so often. Ever since my Dad died, I can’t help but feel that way. I don’t think the building you live in is a home, but the people you live with that are your true home.”

“Oh. I’m sorry,” I didn’t know what to say. It was a touching concept that I decided to adopt right then and there.

Matthew smiled, “No need to apologize.” I nodded. More silence.

“Matthew, what exactly am I supposed to do now?”

He paused, seeming to think it over.

“You can start by calling me Matt. No one ever uses my full name except for Eve. Next, you can relax. This is your pack, your family. You’ll adjust soon enough. Tomorrow will be another big day, you’ve got more training. But just take a step back and get used to the idea. I know it’s a big thing to try to understand.”

I smiled. Perfect advice. “Ok, I think I can do that… Matt.”

“There you go,” he laughed. “Anything else I can help you with?”

I paused, thinking about which of the thousand questions I should ask.

“Yeah, what’s up with the eating thing? Why does everyone wait for a minute before eating?”

Matthew chuckled, “It’s a wolf thing. Alpha eats the kill first… or the sandwich. Whichever happens to be on the menu.”

I nodded with a smile. Matthew stood up to leave.

                “Thank you,” I told him.

“Anytime,” He smiled and walked away. I picked my feet up off the floor and crossed them under me. Maybe this new life was just what I needed. It was a refreshing new beginning in a world full of wonders. Somehow I’d find a way to get used to it.
