That afternoon Matthew went out to scout with Merlin and Wilbur. I went upstairs and shut myself in my room. It was probably a good time to call Leah again.
“You said you were going to call back soon!” Leah yelled into the phone after the first ring.
“This is soon.”
“Not soon enough. Are you ok? What’s going on?”
“I’m fine. Those…people… are gone. I’m alright.”
“And who are these people? How do you know they're gone?” Leah was more worried about Stone River than I was and she had no idea what they were.
“It’s just some sort of…. Family conflict I got dragged into I guess.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means that the family I’m staying with has some sort of …feud with another family. I’m staying here so I’m kind of a part of it. No worries now though. The other family has disappeared.”
“No worries! Yeah, everything’s fine. They up and disappear and everything is fine. That’s what ninjas do. They disappear!” Leah was yelling again.
“They’re gone, ok? Just drop it. I’m safe. Can we talk about something else?”
“Sure, your life is in danger and we have to change the freaking topic! Fine. What significantly unimportant topic do you wish to discuss?” Leah asked.
“Normal stuff.”
“Guys, shoes, clothes, hair, where the heck you are. Take your pick Missy.”
“Well…”
“It’s guys isn’t it?” Leah interrupted my thoughts. Her mind-reading abilitie were back.
“There is a guy.”
“Well you’re living with three. Which one is it?” Leah asked, her reluctance to change subjects dissolving.
“Actually there are six of them.”
“And you couldn’t get me a single number? Some friend you are!"
“Hey, I wasn’t thinking about romance when all of this happened, ok?”
“Apparently you were. So which one is it?”
“Remember the one with the brown hair from the hardware store that day?”
“The tall one?”
“No, the other one.”
“Right! I remember him. So what have you two been doing?” I could tell Leah was wiggling her eyebrows on the other line. Her teasing tone made me hesitate to answer.
“Nothing really. We just hang out now and then. And we kissed.”
“’hanging out’?”
