Picture on the right is Oakley.

I sat down on the edge of the bed and sighed. I felt trapped in the little room. I stood up and walked over to the window. Outside there was a huge oak tree. One of the branches touched the window when the breeze blew.

I slid the window open and crawled out through the tiny opening. It was easy to maneuver into the branches and the leaves provided good cover from the ground. I was well hidden. From my perch I heard the front door open, followed by footsteps on the porch.

Voices filled the air. I could tell it was the group from downstairs.

“How do you think she’ll do?” Someone asked.

I saw them walking into the woods.

“Do you think she’s figured it out yet?” Zeph asked.

“It’s only a matter of time,” Merlin answered. They walked into the trees.

Oakley paused, lingering near the back, “I’ll be right there.”

“Oak, we need everyone scouting. We can’t have Stone River creeping up on us,” Buck complained.

“I’ll just be a minute. I’ll catch up, go ahead,” Oakley called running back toward the house.

“Fine,” Merlin sighed. The group disappeared into the woods.

Oakley peeked out from the corner of the house, making sure everyone was in the woods. He jogged over to the tree I was sitting in. With one swift movement he was sitting in the lowest branch of the tree. He pulled himself up to the next branch. He was three branches below me now.

“Nice tree isn’t it,” He looked up at me.

                I didn’t answer.

                “How are you feeling?”

“Better now, I guess,” I shrugged and looked at the ground.  Oakley nodded.

“I remember what it feels like.” Oakley looked into the woods. I didn’t bother to ask.

                “Where am I?” I asked.

“You are currently sitting in the best climbing tree within a three mile range,” Oakley smiled up at me, his sandy hair falling into his eyes.

“Right. So  where is this tree exactly?”

“About five miles from the running trail we found you on.”

                “Oh.”

                “Yup.”

                “Can I go home?”

“I don’t think you really wanna hang out in the woods right now. Besides, I think you’ll want to stay for a bit.” He answered squinting against the sunlight.

                “Oh.”

“Everyone’s gone, you can go back downstairs if you want. Or you may want to wait a few minutes, I think I hear Katie getting up.”
