My stomach woke me up. It growled and painfully and contorted, startling me from my sleep. I had never been so hungry in my life. I slid out of bed, realizing that I was still wearing the clothes I’d pulled on hastily after patrolling.

I dug through the drawers hurriedly, wanting to get to the kitchen as fast as possible. I pulled on the outfit I had on the day Maggie had complemented me: Beige shorts and my Aztec tank top. I redid the braid that had come undone in my sleep and hurried out the door.

As I walked down the stairs I could smell food. Someone was cooking something. Something that made my mouth water and my stomach growl even worse than before. I stepped into the kitchen and saw Matthew standing in front of the stove. A frying pan was filled with slices of bread.

He turned around to see who was there.

“Good afternoon,” he smiled. My stomach growled again. I couldn’t help the blush from creeping into my cheeks.

“I’m making French toast, want some?”

“Yes please…. Is it the afternoon already?” I asked. I didn’t think I had slept that long.

“Just barely. It’s quarter after one.”

“Oh,” I sat down at the table. “Did the pack find anything new?”

“They picked up the Stone River male’s scent again on our northern border. They haven’t seen him yet. No sign of the others. “

The thought made me uneasy. A wolf from the Stone River pack had attacked me once already. Now I was a wolf, did that mean they would attack again, this time not sparing my life? I gulped, momentarily forgetting my hunger. Matt turned around and met my eyes.

“Don’t worry. They haven’t crossed the border.”

“They did once.” I said the words that were on my mind. The black alpha had crossed the border.

                “They haven’t since then.”

                “Who’s to say they won’t?”

“Laura,” there was pleading in his voice.

I looked up from the table.

“You’re safe. We’ll protect you. The pack will protect you. I promise.”

“I wouldn’t be so sure about that,” I mumbled.

“What do you mean?” He had heard me with his wolf hearing.

“I wouldn’t speak for Katie if I was you.”

“I’ll talk to her. She’ll come around. She’s just jealous.”

“Jealous?” I asked. What could she possibly be jealous of? I’d been attacked by a wolf, kicked out by my aunt and become the newbie in a pack of werewolves. She still had her home, her friends and the life she’d always known.

“Katie’s been the only female in the pack for a long time. Her wolf side views you as a threat, that’s all.”
