Sunday, Alessia
__________"Church was so beautiful and todays sermon was much needed." I smiled slightly as I swallowed a mouthful of greens. The wonderful taste tingled inside of my mouth as I took in another big mouth full.
Every Sunday, my mom cooks a big dinner for our small family. This afternoon consisted of chicken, greens, macaroni&cheese, black-eyed peas, and hot water cornbread with iced tea on the side.
"You never let me down when it comes to the food." My step dad; David complimented.
I laughed silently redirecting my attention to my step sister; Ina.
Coming down the stairs tiredly, she revealed her beautiful smile as soon as she noticed me. I couldn't help the smile that plastered across my face as I quickly jumped up out of my seat.
Pulling her into a hug, I held her for a good minute. I loved my sister to death. Even though we weren't blood related, she'll always be the sister I have always wanted. I wouldn't trade her in for the world.
I was 25 years old, while Ina on the other hand was 27. She's always treated me as if I were the oldest.
"Why didn't you come to church this morning?" I asked.
It was unlikely of Ina to miss church, mostly because she's never missed a service.
Ina smiled, twirling me around as she studied my Sunday attire.
My sister loved fashion. In fact, she had just reached her big break as a fashion designer.
I helped her along the way with finances and finding a building that best suits her.
Ina wasn't into the whole big shop, trendy clothing thing. 6 months ago, I actually surprised her with a small building for her starting shop.
Lord, I tell you she cried for days. She would continuously thank me over and over again every chance she had gotten.
Ina was known around the local Los Angeles area for being just THAT fashion designer. My sister was just that good and she made me just as proud.
She made all of us proud actually.
"I'm sorry, I overslept. I'm so tired." She groaned, smiling weakly.
"Well, how are you? You look sick." I asked shoving her frizzy hair from out of her face.
"Exhausted." She corrected, going over towards the kitchen table before grabbing a piece of cornbread.
"What's up with you?" I asked.
The kitchen became awfully quiet as she looked over at mom.
Looking over at my mother also, I noticed her perky smile and up right posture. My father, on the other hand was looking down at his plate, playing around in his black-eyed peas.
I slowly redirected my attention back over to Ina, her eyes shimmering as she looked down at her stomach. I looked down also, confused as to what she was trying to tell me.
"Ina, what are you saying? Like, you know I'm kind of slow." I questioned becoming quite inpatient.
Everyone was acting so weird and I was completely oblivious as to what was going on.
