Lucas' POV
I've always hated hospitals. When mum has exceptionally bad hangovers, she comes here to get special medicine. When dad was alive, he would come here to get treatment for his skin cancer. I would come with them, and hate it.
I hate it now.
We've been waiting in the waiting room for half an hour. Farkle is reading fanfiction on Wattpad, and Maya is curled up in her chair, sleeping. She looks like an adorable kitten.
Not as adorable as Riley.
"Lucas?"
I turn around, and Maya rises from her slumber. Her messy, gold hair shadows her face and her black skinny jeans are covered in Riley's blood.
"Huckleberry, Huckleberry. Why haven't you told her?"
"Told her what?"
They say the eyes are the window to the soul, and I've never liked windows. Behind those sea green eyes, I can see pain. Maya and I dated for a few months when we were 15. We ended the relationship when we realised we were better off being friends, we did not think of each other in a romantic way, and it was hurting Riley.
15 was when the demons came.
"Lucas, you need to tell her."
"I can't."
"Riley is slowly slipping away. No matter what we do, there is still a great chance that she will disappear, and our happiness along with it."
"I CAN'T."
"Tell her before it's too late. She might come back if you tell her."
"I CAN'T!"
"Why?"
"Because I'm a f-ing coward, that's why."
"Ranger Rick, you need to be the cowboy. The cowboy that gets the girl in the end, and rides off into the sunset-"
"Every night, I lie in my bed, contemplating about the fact that it might've been my fault! The demons attacked her around the time we started dating. Riley and I have never progressed in our relationship in the past three years! Apparently, Riley was and still is especially terrified by the demon who looked like me! Is it my fault they came? Am I the reason why Riley tries to kill herself? Is this-"
Maya punched my stomach, and I instantly stopped talking.
"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" Farkle cried, his dramatic reaction to fanfiction making me and Maya giggle.
Suddenly, Riley walked out of the room.
