"Okay Ian, let me explain."
"All ears."
"..."
"I'm afraid."
"Afraid of what?! There's absolutely nothing to be ashamed about, other than the fact that you hadn't come out to me when I confessed to you. I thought you were straight, or something. Don't feed me false information Ellie."
"Yeah, I could've done that better. Or something?"
"Like an aromantic or whatnot. Keep going."
Elliot takes a deep breath.
"It's my mom."
"..."
"Is she a homophobe?"
"No, but my dad is."
"..."
"Elliot, it's okay. You don't need t-"
"She's bisexual. My dad didn't know, so when she told him she had feelings for another woman, he beat her."
Ian and Elliot talk in low voices and whispers, even though Marina's was completely empty. The conversation was too raw and vulnerable to be out in the open at all.
"How old were you?"
"Two. My mom of course divorced him later, and remarried this lady named Jasmine. Jasmine hates me, but mom loves her, so I can deal with it. I understand though; you don't want the spitting image of your wife's ex-husband around, especially if he was abusive to her. Dad got paranoid and stuff then; like what if my son's gay? What if he likes guys? He wouldn't let it go, and any supposed sign of my homosexuality was pointed out to be corrected."
"So yeah, I'm pretty afraid."
"..."
"You deserve better."
"I know."
"Why don't you live with your mom?"
"Remember Jasmine?"
"..."
"Why do your hugs always get me emotional?"
