I tossed and turned in my what seemed like a rock hard bed at the moment. I kicked the blanket off of me. But then I got cold, so I rolled out of bed and put it back on.
Ugh I can't sleep. I thought. I might as well just get up.
I grabbed my laptop and started to read threw my emails. Right then, I got a call. The phone 'Sam' flashed across my phone screen with a picture I took with her and Paige at the Meet N' Greet. I pressed accept, and then I heard a panicked breathing to her.
"Hey Sam?" I said.
"Alyce? Thank God. Tyler wouldn't pick up. I am so sorry to be bothering you this late. I-I just don't have anyone else to go to-" Her voice cracked through the phone.
"Sam, believe me it is okay. We are always glad to help. I couldn't sleep anyways I just got up." I took pity upon her.
"Okay I am sorry a-anyways." She sniffed.
"What's the matter Sam? Is everything okay?" I sounded like a concerned mom.
"Yes, everything is fine-" She stopped mid sentence. Her voice trailing off.
"It's okay. You can be honest with me. You don't have to lie."
"No. Everything isn't okay. My husband- ex husband, won't even come in to see his daughter. It is bad Alyce. I have no one else to talk to. It is severe. The cancer is growing worse." She sobbed. I could imagine her on the other end of the line sobbing in the waiting room grasping a tissue between her fingers, Paige in the room with Laila.
"Wait, what?! How? I thought the doctors gave her the surgery two days ago? I thought everything got better from here? What happened?" I didn't mean to interrogate her.
"They did give her the surgery she needed. While they were in her system. They found a-a-" She started to sob even harder.
"Sam, what did they find?" I worried.
They found a ruptured tumor on her spleen. But that isn't the worst part." She wept.
"What's the worst part?" I implored.
"They gave her only fourteen hours left to live Alyce. She is going to die t-tomorrow." Sam's voice dripping in defeat.
"I am so so sorry, Sam. I don't know what to say." I went speechless. My hand found its way to my mouth on instinct. "And your ex- husband?"
She answered immediately. "Laila cried and cried for him. I called him. He won't come. Not even to say goodbye."
"What are you doing talking to me then? Go spend the last hours of your daughter's life with her! You can't leave her alone in that hospital room. We are going to be there soon. Let me just wake up Tyler and grab my jacket-"
"She won't let me see her. She doesn't want me to see her in so much pain. I don't want her to see me so heart broken. I need to stay strong for my baby girl." She tried to pull herself together.
"We are coming, Sam. Go be with her. You can't let that come between y'all. Hell, it could be the last time you ever see you daughter. They gave her a time limit of fourteen hours. Did you ever think it could be shorter than that? You can't spend the rest of your life regretting that decision, Sam. Trust me." I commanded.
"You're right. Thanks so much Alyce. I am sorry to trouble y-you. I will see you in a bit." She hung up the phone soon after.
I grabbed my jacket, and a banana.
"What is going on?" Tyler looked at me confused. He grabbed his glasses. I threw a shirt at him.
"Laila, she isn't going to live."
