Part 6

The beginning of it all....

I want you to come and meet my parents Ava." Zoo said while we waited for our school bus to arrive.

"Are you sure?" ". "What if they don't like me"? I said.

"Trust me!"Everything will be fine." "We're having a party for my father and I want you come as my date." He said .

"Ok well, when is it?" I said looking nervous and anxious at the same time.
We stood at the bus ramp talking more about his father's birthday party. Zoo' s family were Haitian and when it came to parties , let's just say they knew the meaning of the word celebration.
Finally the school buses were pulling in and Zoo began walking away slowly

"Tomorrow night at 8:30pm. "You down or what?" He said smiling.

"Yes I'm down". I said just before getting on the bus.
I saw Katrina approaching the buses while I was sitting down.
Katrina didn't live in the school district; she would ride the bus to my house after school and wait for her mom to pick her up. Out of all the times Katrina came over after school today I must say I was extremely happy for her to be over. I thought to myself. I needed her to help me find something to wear to Zoo's father party.
Katrina got on the bus and plopped down in the seat next to me.

"So wassup girl?!" You got anything planned this weekend. She asked.

"Kinda!." But I'm not sure girl. I said looking worried.

"Why you looking all traumatized"!?
Katrina said with her face bald up.

"Girl, Zoo's is having a party....

"A party and you didn't tell me."!? Katrina blurted out cutting me off.

"Calm down trick"! "He is having a party for his father's birthday ." He wants me to come over to meet them". I said.

"Meet who"!? Katrina said still looking confused. "Girl! "Get to the point". She said.

"His parents" I said

"Girl what you tripping for"?! "Just be calm." "Make sure you speak to his mother and just be you." Your great girl". She said while smiling.

The bus pull off and the kids in the back begin to do their every day ritual. One of the nappy headed boys got up to stand on the seat and began beating on the ceiling of the bus. All of a sudden this kid name Lil Kris began flowing to beat. The bus was to turnt.

"Thanks girl"! I said with ease.

"I'll ask my mom to take us to the mall so we can find you something fly to wear". We slapped each other a high-five and began turning up with the rest of the bus.

Later on that night I waited patiently for Zoo to pick me up. I paced back and forth through out my room trying to stay calm.
I walked over to my vanity and starred at myself in the mirror. My hair was pulled back into a neat high ponytail and I had on just a touch of make-up that I added to my already astonishing features. I wore a shear colored blouse that opened slightly in the front revealing a peak of my pecan colored skin; light blue levy jeans that hugged my ankles; and a pair of my moms brown knee high boots. I gazed at myself long and hard making sure everything was neatly in place. I let out a long sigh and proceeded to walk down to living room.

"Baby girl you look beautiful". My father said with his eyes focused on the television.

"Frank you didn't even look at the girl". My mother said.

"Yeah dad," "you didn't even look at her". One of my brothers added in.

We all burst out into laughter except my father. He begin to look worried. "Ava I think your moving to fast baby". He finally spoke out causing us all to shut our mouths and listen. My dad had that type of affect. We respected our father. He was the head of the house and we never dared to doubt that. "Ava, now I know you like this boy and I can't do anything to change that, but if you ever do anything to cross me or put this family in danger you will no longer be excepted in this house."
I looked deep in my father's eyes searching for a sign of leniency; but he never cracked a smile. He was serious and I didn't understand why.
"Ava I think he's here". My mom said while trying to ease the tension.
I gave my dad a kiss on the cheek but he didn't move. He just sat there starring at the TV. "I'll walk you to the car"my mom said.
