Heartbeat

Words: 2831

Summary: Dan is a vampire and has been living with Phil for three years and tries to convince himself that there's no emotional relationship between them.

"How about Frankie and Bennie's?" Phil asked.

"To be honest Phil, I'd rather go home and order pizza." Dan sighed.

"Oh come on Dan, we haven't been out to eat in months. We can't stay cooped up in the house the whole time." Phil chuckled and Dan's eyes flickered to Phil's smile. Immediately denial struck Dan's mind again for the millionth time as he admired his friend's face. Phil was attractive - Dan had come to terms with that but he refused to believe he had an attraction to him.

Phil was just another human right? They weren't even friends, Dan was just acting right? After 400 years on the earth Dan had had a constant fake smile and fake life - Phil wasn't any different right?

"I'm not hungry anyway." Dan lied. He was hungry just not for food ...

"I heard your stomach earlier Dan, we're going out whether you like it or not." Phil laughed and shoved Dan's shoulder lightly. Dan huffed and sent Phil a scowl but the effect was ruined by his pout. "Being adorable will get you no where." Phil pointed out and kept walking.

Dan's eyes went round and his jaw dropped a little. His dead heart seemed to flutter at Phil's comment but the moment was ruined by Dan's harsh internal denial. A vampire and a human wouldn't work anyway. There was so much danger involved in a relationship like that - hell even being friends was a safety hazard. Dan was an experienced Vampire so had gotten used to the constant smell of humans and the sound of Phil's blood pumping through his veins. It still bothered him but it was like a dull ache which was easily forgotten.

Dan suddenly stopped dead in his tracks and tensed up, his canines growing and his eyes bleeding to black. He glared into the darkness of the alleyway opposite him. He quickly turned away from Phil who was luckily looking the other way. "Phil I need to pee." Dan lied.

"Dan! Can't you just wait till we get there?" Phil asked in annoyance.

"No!" Dan snapped, not meaning to be harsh.

"Alright make it quick." Phil sighed.

Dan immediately walked into the alley and stood at his intimidating height. "You must be pretty old to have sensed me so quickly." A voice spoke from the darkness.

"I could smell your blood lust a mile away." Dan hissed.

"You're friend just looked so very appealing ... not that he's actually your friend. One night stand? Hump and dump? Leading on? You paying him? ... or maybe he's your little blood bank pet." The man chuckled. Dan's eyes were as black as night as the rage almost made him shake.

"You don't lay a fucking finger on him you hear me?" Dan spat protectively - somehow the thought of losing Phil made his non-existent heart hurt and it was hard to deny how much he cared for the boy who he was apparently pretending to be friends with after three years of living together.

"Don't worry I can see you're rather invested in him, although ... you sure we can't share? I'll make it nice and quick for your toy if you want - show him a good time before he goes." The vampire offered, his fangs glinting in the moonlight as well as the drool on his lips. The thought of devouring Phil causing him to salivate.

Dan couldn't handle the fury he felt at the younger vampire's words. His hand moved so fast that even the other vampire didn't see it before it was too late and he was pinned against the wall. "What the fuck did I just say?" Dan hissed, his fangs bared intimidatingly whilst his iron grip was unsuccessfully trying to be pried from the other's neck.
