The inside of the house was as I imagined it would be and typical of most people like her aunt and uncle, a subtle, yet homely display of wealth. I followed her to the kitchen, and
put the bags down on the black granite counter.
We worked in silence for the few minutes it took to pack the groceries away.
“Can I offer you something?” She asked.
“No”
She was nervous about what to do next.
“I don’t have to start preparing dinner until later.” She told me. “We could go out back for a bit.”
Again, she led and I followed. Angie sat on an outdoor sofa set near the pool area. I sat across from her. She looked away from me.
“Don’t be nervous.” I said gently.
“I can’t help it, you make me nervous.”
“Why is that?”
“I think you already know.”
We stared at each other for a moment. Then, I got up and sat next to her. Our knees almost touched as we faced each other.
“I’m not sure how to deal with this. My last relationship with a human ended badly. I told myself I would not get involve with another human ever again.”
“Why? What happened?”
I hesitated. “I would rather not discuss her, ever. It was a long time ago. Not in your lifetime.”
“I’m not her.”
“No one will ever be her; she was one of a kind.” It was the wrong choice of words. I regretted them even before I saw the hurt expression that quickly flitted across her face.
She misinterpreted my words. “Sophia was temperamental which made our relationship difficult to be in.”
“You can have all the time alone you need. I won’t cling.”
“When you love someone that doesn’t matter, I don’t want to hurt you.”
“What do you mean?”
“When we find the right person, he or she becomes our life partner. I can’t spend forever with a human and what if my life partner comes along?”
She understood. I saw my words sink in.
“Hopefully, I’ll grow old and die before she comes along or maybe I’ll find another human or vampire to replace you.”
She left me speechless.
“I’m kidding.” She announced suddenly much to my relief but then she looked away and I knew it was not okay.
“You still want this to happen even after what I said.”
“Yes” She whispered.
“Then consider this; that small amount of my blood you carry has the ability to bind you to me. What you feel is partly an illusion.”
“I don’t understand what that means.”
“My blood is the cause of your strong attraction to me and possibly your dream. It had the same effect on Lucas.”
Her brain worked as she thought my words over. “Maybe. Maybe not. Lucas was gay and you are very handsome. I liked you even before you fed me your blood.”
