Eddie's POV
For the rest of the night we played video games on Kevin's Xbox. I would have liked to stay longer, but I had to check up on Aleks. It's like taking care of a real dog.
"Alright, Kevin. I have to go, see you Monday?" I asked, adjusting my glasses.
"Sure, bye Eddie." He said, still focused on the game. I rolled my eyes.
"See ya Eddie." Steven said, looking attentively at Kevin playing.
"Bye Steven."
I walked to the front door and opened it, closing it behind me after I exited. I jogged down the front steps and hopped in my car. As I was driving my mind kept wandering over to Steven.
Was he from the same lab as Aleks? How did he escape? Why is there such a large reward for him when there wasn't when Aleks escaped?
I remembered when Aleks first arrived at my house. It was raining and thundering, the sky darker than usual.
-flashback-
I was asleep when I heard a window break. I bolted out of my bed and grabbed the pocket knife beside my lamp and peeked over the top of the stairs. There was glass everywhere. I saw a rumpled shape on the carpet in the living room.
"H-hello?" I asked, making sure the person was still alive.
I heard a small whimper and I immediately went down the stairs. I leaned beside the young boy and gently put an arm on his shoulder.
"P-please don't make me go back there. I-I don't want to go back there. Please." He whimpered desperately.
"Shh, it's okay. I won't make you go back, I promise." I said gently. He only let out a faint smile before a loud blast of thunder scared him till he was sitting upright. I was about to ask what was wrong, but he clung to me and took my breath away.
"H-hey. What's the matter?" I groaned hoarsely.
"The t-thunder. It hurts m-my ears."
Only then did I notice the dark brown dog ears sticking out of his head. I gaped. What the hell is this kid? I put a hand on his wet hair and tried my best to make him stop shivering.
"What's your name?" I asked, trying to distract him from the storm.
"Aleks."
"Cool name. My name's Eddie."
"Eddie?"
"Yeah?"
"Thank you."
"For what?" I asked, confused.
"For not making me go back to that god-awful place."
"Where were you before?"
"I dunno. S-some sort of lab."
"A lab?"
"Yeah. I don't know why I was there, but, they wouldn't let me leave. I had to h-hurt some people to escape. They were going to kill me! I h-had no choice. I'm sorry," he trailed off, sobbing. My eyes softened.
"Shh, it's okay Aleks. You were only defending yourself. They probably deserved it anyway." I murmured, rubbing his back sympathetically.
I heard him sigh and then he was asleep.
-end of flashback-
Before I knew it I was parked in my driveway. I shrugged and got out of the car. I walked up to the front door and unlocked it using my key.
I walked in and was greeted by the Russian brunette.
"Hey Eddie! What took you so long? You said you were gonna be back at six. It's almost eight-thrity!" Aleks growled, shooting me a glare.
"Sorry, I was meeting up with another hybrid." I said, shrugging like it was no big deal. I saw Aleks's eyes light up.
"You did? Was it the one on the news!?"
"Yeah. His name is Steven." I saw Aleks's smile falter.
"S-Steven? He escaped?"
"You knew him?" I asked, surprised.
"Yeah. I passed by his cage everytime I had to do some stupid check-up. I assumed he was dead because he was always bleeding or fighting some animal when I passed by. Whenever I passed by he would look at me desperately. I-I would just stare at the ground to look away." Aleks finished.
"He would fight?"
"Yeah, they gave him this fighting instinct thing. They gave all of us some actually. But Steven got the most."
"Fighting instinct? Why would they do that? No wonder you guys escaped."
"It's not that simple Eddie. We could only fight back if we were angry. For the most part, I felt only bitter, sad, and lonely. Steven had to be really upset if he wanted to leave. His cage was on the top floor of the building too, so he had to fight countless scientists. Unless," Aleks paused, thinking,"unless he jumped out the window into thay nearby pond.."
"How many floors did the lab have?" I asked.
"About ten floors." Aleks stated.
I widened my eyes. Ten floors? Even if you landed in water from jumping at that height, it would hurt.
"Are you sure? How could he have made it all the way to Kevin's house if he jumped from that building; all in the while being severely wounded?"
Aleks shrugged. I sighed.
Maybe I should talk to Steven about this the next time I see him. I thought.
"Alright, I'll ask him about it later. What do you want to do?" I asked, changing the subject.
"Wanna watch a movie?"
"Sure, which one?"
"Hotel For Dogs." Aleks joked.
"Alright, be right back." I say smirking as I rounded the hallway before he could protest. I giggled when he let out a very heart-felt, "FUCK!"
