Kevin's POV
We finally made it to the side entrance of the lab. There were security cameras everywhere, but we didn't care. We would fight to the death if we had to.
Eddie tried to open the door but it was locked. He then took a few steps back and rammed himself into the door. After a few more tries it bursted open. We quickly ran inside, following behind Aleks, who looked like he was going to be sick.
I don't blame him, but we have to hurry. I reached up a hand on the Russian's shoulder reassuringly.
"Come Aleks, focus. You can do it." Aleks let out a shaky nod, but continued to listen and find any traces of Steven. There was nothing on the first floor, mind a few guards, so we quickly ran up the steps to the second floor.
As soon as we left the last step upwards, Aleks froze. Eddie and I exchanged a glance but said nothing. Aleks found a scent trail. He took a few stiff steps forward before his legs shook a little. Eddie instinctively reached forward and caught him as he fell.
Tears were forming in brown eyes. He looked as if he was remembering something. Don't tell me that this is the floor where Aleks was kept? The cages were only big enough for a child to stand in, and there was barely enough room to lie down.
"Aleks, it's okay. You're not going back in there, I promise." Eddie said quietly. Aleks let out a quiet sob.
He's trying so hard to be strong. We should have never brought him along. This is too much, I thought.
"Aleks, do you know where Steven is?" I asked gently. He turned to look at me and nodded. I let out a quiet sigh of relief. He stood up and wiped his tears away. He quickly walked through the maze-like corridors of cages, trying his best not to look at the other hybrids who were groaning and pain or crying.
Finally he came upon an angry-looking Steven. There was dried blood running down his face. He must have gotten hit with something in the back of the head.
"I told you not to follow me. You could be killed! Kevin, why would risk so much just to come get me?" Steven said, his eyes showing a deep confusion. I smiled a little to myself.
"Because I love you Steven. You are my world, without you I don't have a reason to live." I said quietly, Steven's eyes widened. I saw tears form but he didn't let them fall.
Trying to be strong for us huh? Heheh, it doesn't suit you Steven. I thought, tears brimming my eyes. They slowy dripped down my face and Steven let out a sad whine.
"K-Kevin please don't cry." He said softly, his voice cracking a little bit. I wiped my eyes and began searching my pockets for a paper clip or something to undo the lock.
I actually managed to find one and I sighed with releif. We can ge him out of here. I unfolded the paper clip anf fumbled it into the lock with shaky hands. I smiled when I heard a clack. I opened the door and Steven practically tackled me to the ground.
I could feel his smile against my chest. I tightly wrapped my arms around him. I could hear his happy muffled sobs. He didn't want to leave me, he just wanted to keep me safe.
"Alright, come on let's hurry. I can smell guards coming." Aleks said nervously, glancing in the direction of where the guards would soon be arriving. I nodded. We ran back through the maze, until Steven wobbled a littla and his face drained of color.
"Steven!?" I said anxiously. His breathing was heavy, and he could barely keep his eyes open.
"M-my head hurts." Steven whispered, his voice strained. I nodded and carefully lifted him up over my shoulder. We jogged down the stairs and were met with about five guards along with a man in a suit.
He looked up at us as we froze on the staircase. Aleks grew pale and his were wide. His lips parted and it looked as if he were silently screaming. A sudden realization came to me.
This guy is The Creator.
