The Last Wolf Standing

Chapter Nineteen

    I charged at Cole but Zack knocked me away before I could get close enough to take my brother down. Before I knew it, Nick was above me, growling and snapping at my face. I buckled my hind legs then pushed him away with as much force as I could muster. It was just enough to have space to move. I got up from under him and ran away but abruptly turned around and ran at all three of them who were standing side-by-side.

Swiftly, I jumped into the air and kicked Zack in the snout. When I handed, I ran towards my brother again, he was in a fighting stance. I pushed myself into the air but ended up jumping right over him. He used this as his opportunity to get the upper hand. Cole pushed me from behind and so I rolled over and landed on my back. Nick held me down and Zack did the same. Cole stepped towards me threateningly but I bared my teeth at him. I was not going to show any fear, the Golden Creek Pack thrives on being feared.

I bared my teeth and let a low growl erupt from my chest. All of the boys looked shocked, I couldn't help but to laugh mentally.

"Concentrate Maddie. When you are in a situation like this what do you do?" I heard Zack's voice invade my thoughts.

I had chosen not to be in wolf form too often because far too many pack members would be able to hear my thoughts at any given time, especially if they were in close proximity to me. I had learned how to quiet the voices but I knew they could still hear my thoughts all too clearly which I did not like, it was always something that I detested.

The one good thing about it is that it would come in very handy during combat. I made a mental note to shift into my wolf form more regularly.

"Try to shake them." I replied and he agreed.

I took my own advice and struggled against the two holding me down. My brother pounced on me and I howled in fake pain. The three boys were so shocked and apologetic that they loosened their hold on me which was long enough for me to break free and take down all of them.

Cole got hit in the chest with my head, I kicked Nick in his face and tackled Zack. A wolfish grin spread across my face as I licked Zack affectionately. I heard whines behind me so I looked back to see the boys giving me disgusted looks. I laughed mentally and hopped off of Zack. I walked to the tree that my clothes were behind to signal that I was done for the day. Practice had run really long and I was exhausted.

Hurriedly, I changed back and into my clothes then headed deeper into woods after saying my goodbyes. Cole and the rest of the guys were walking next to me, we decided to take our time. I was waiting for the multitude of questions that I knew the boys had kept bottled up for the whole day, just anticipating the right moment to unleash them all.

"How's this new pack treating you?" Cole started off, I could almost hear the wheels turning in the other boys' heads with the questions they wanted to ask.

"In all honesty, I like it better than your pack. The interrogation was rough but after I joined it's been fun. Some of the people I have met are really nice and Zack and his family have accepted me. Lily practically lives with them now." I tried to summarise the past month and a half as best as I could.

"Did you know that Jaden had a thing for you, Little Bit?" Nick pointed out, I looked across at Jaden to see that he was smirking and not even attempting to deny it, "He was trying to make your boyfriend jealous,"

"He's not my boyfriend." I began while shooting a glare at Nick, "Jaden is an idiot, I know he didn't like me because he would have told me plus he always had some human girl toying with so either way it wouldn't have made a difference. Maybe if he had told me sooner, if it's the truth, then we could have made something happen."

"I guess I should have told you and maybe none of this would have happened." Jaden chimed in a sad tone before continuing with what else he had to say, "Since we are sharing secrets, both Nick and Daniel had a thing for Lily but they settled it saying that to avoid hurting the other, neither of them would pursue her."

"That's so cute! Wait so two of you liked her and only one liked me. I need to step my game up." I laughed lightheartedly. "Cole, doesn't it bother you that one of your friends liked your little sister?"

"I threatened to kill Jaden multiple times, I guess he got the message." He chuckled but in my peripheral vision I saw Jaden grimace. "Oh, and Maddie, you'd be surprised as to how many guys actually liked you, both human and wolf alike."

"I'm ballin' and no one can tell me differently." I used slang which I hardly ever do.

"Behave." Daniel stopped me in my tracks. "Do you think that you'll ever come back to us?"

"I don't think so. If we actually succeed I will come by and visit, I really want to see my parents again because I really miss them but I'm comfortable here." I explained.

"Fair enough."

"So, how have you guys been doing? Any of you have girlfriends?" I wondered.

I asked that question as soon as we arrived at the door facing the forest. It was unlocked, we didn't really have anything to steal so we left the door unlocked to ensure we could get inside after shifting. We walked inside and they followed me to the living room. Cole and Nick sat on the couch but Daniel, Jaden and I chose the floor.

"Cassie and I have finally made it official after two years of throwing the idea around." Cole beamed. They were friends for years and I always knew that at some point they would get into a relationship. Cassie Lane was beautiful with her chocolate skin, curly hair and devastatingly gorgeous brown eyes.

"Took you long enough." I grinned.

"I'm talking to this girl in our pack, she keeps to herself, her name in Violet Danvers. I don't think that you know her but she's breath-taking. She has her hair dyed purple and she has a lot of tattoos but most of her clothes cover them, blue eyes and she's a little taller than you." Daniel sighed happily, he was about two inches shorter than me. I commended him for his choice in a lady.

"I see you like them tall, huh." I winked.

"As usual, I love a short girl so my newest girlfriend is little and she's a human. Amanda Francis is one of the best I have ever had, with her short blonde hair, brown eyes and a butt to make you swoon, I just might keep her for a while." Nick delved into his description of his newest lady. "She's seventeen, too."

"The youngest you have had, you better be careful with her." I laughed loudly.

"Well, we all know that I'm playing the field to find the right one for me." Jaden chuckled.

"I think the right one is all of them." I added.

The guys and I continued talking for hours, only breaking off our conversation when the exhaustion was too much to ignore. My brother slept in my bed with me, Nick took the couch and the twins took Lily's room.
