Chapter Twenty-One

There were thirty-eight fighters, including Zack, Lily, Seth, myself, Cole and his friends. We were all scattered around the forest waiting for Vance and his crew to arrive, the wind was blowing their scent around us. They were very close. I heard growls and howls of pain which indicated that the surprise attacks were working.

The loud thumping of paws hitting the dirt was getting closer to us with every passing second. I was no longer nervous, hatred and determination licked every vein in my body. Soon enough, many wolves started to come into view, a lot of them were vaguely familiar. They were outnumbered but they were very well trained.

Before I could blink, one wolf had taken down two of those who were fighting for me. They weren't dead, just unconscious. I charged at the wolf that was leading, taking a chunk out of one of his front paws. He howled in pain but then snapped at my face. I dodged the attack and rammed my head into his chest, knocking the wind out of him. I didn't want to kill anyone but that didn't mean that I was going to allow them to recuperate quickly. I clawed at his chest and legs, making the wound extensive enough to stop him from healing quickly but not deep enough to kill him.

As soon as I was done with him I ran into the crowd of fighting wolves, seeing one watching a smaller wolf fight with one around the same size. This she-wolf was going to try to ambush my ally. I knew this by how she slowly took steps towards the pair.

I ran through the trees and came up behind her, catching her off-guard. She, however, recovered quickly and scratched my front right leg. I saw red gush from the wound but I could not let that stop me. I scratched her face and her stomach. She kicked me off of her, landing on my back.

She took the time I used to get up to try to back away from me but I was not going to let her get away that easily. I jumped onto her and sunk my teeth into the paw she tried to push me off with. The pain was far too excruciating for her to bare and so she passed out.

The same wolf she was going to ambush was howling, she needed help. I analysed the situation. The wolf she was fighting had my ally pinned down and there was no way for her to escape. I sprinted as fast as I could. The opponent lift her paw, claws long and sharp to take a swipe at my ally's throat. I got there just in time to knock her off. She struggled beneath me trying to get free. My ally came up from behind, jumped over me and landed by the opponent's head. She did what was about to be done to her and killed the small wolf.

The event shocked me, no one has ever been killed in front of me before. It felt surreal and I helped to facilitate her demise, I cried on the inside but remembered that I had no time to explore my feeling, there were still far too many wolves running around trying to harm me and my pack.

The Golden Creek Pack was known for its fighters and they did not disappoint. They all put up a really huge fight and I had to do my best to watch all possible angles as I could at one time. They loved to attack the most vulnerable in a pack, it was like a game to them.

A large brown wolf came from my left and butted its head in my side sending me sideways. I rolled but got back onto my feet. If I stayed down the wolf would not have hesitated, it would have killed me. I charged at him, running from side to side to confuse him but it didn't work. The wolf backed me and when I was close enough it kicked and hit me in my face with its hind legs. I was disoriented and I knew I was in trouble.

"I need help, a brown wolf is going to kill me." I shouted my thoughts so that any available person could come to my rescue. I tried to send a mental image of what the wolf looked like.

"I'm on my way." A voice that I could not place answered.

By the time help arrived, the wolf had me pinned beneath him. He didn't want to kill me quickly, he wanted to play first. His arrogance would be his downfall. The wolf on top of me was so distracted with his games that he didn't notice that someone had come to help me. One second I was struggling to get up and the next I was giving my rival deep cuts making him yelp. The wolf that came to help me finished him off. I ran away before the deed was done. I didn't know if the wolf killed the enemy but I wasn't going to stick around to find out.

"Anyone there? I've got three that are fast approaching." I heard Lily think, she was panicking.

"I'm coming. Someone just helped me out." I thought to her.

I ran as fast as I could, she was howling as a signal so that I knew exactly where to find her. In less than ten seconds I had found her backing away from three very huge wolves around Aaron's size. I jumped and turned then kicked one of them with my hind legs. Lily pounced on him, biting and scratching as much as she could without killing him.

I fell when I kicked the wolf so as I tried to get up, the two wolves hopped on me, growling and snapping at my face, their slobber getting dangerously close to my fur. It reminded me of practice. The boys had me pinned down and I had to struggle to get free. I pulled my hind legs as close to my stomach and I could get them and used all of the force I could muster to propel the wolf into the air and off of me.

Having my torso free, I brought my head up and connected it with the jaw of the wolf that was still on me. He fell and so I got up and did a lot of damage. He was still conscious but unable to more any of his limbs without causing himself pain. I looked around to see Lily taking down the wolf that was on my torso.

We ran next to each other after all three attackers were down, looking to help anyone that needed us. The wolves that littered the floor were mostly those opposing us. Lily and I checked on those that were our allies. None of them were dead but they were severely harmed. We dragged as many of them as we could to the entrance to Infinity but it was a long walk and the fight was still going on. We could hear the thoughts of all those who were fighting but they didn't need any help, the opponent had to battle three on one in our favour.

I looked around for Cole until I found him, Lily was still with me and we were having the same thoughts.

Where was Vance?

Throughout all of this, I had not seen Vance and I found that very strange because he was the one that was supposed to be leading his band of abusive misfits. I couldn't hear Cole's thoughts but I could see it in his face that the same thing was going through his mind.

Cole led us to the other boys and Seth along with Zack found us and joined the group as we tried to figure out why Vance didn't show up. We all knew that he wanted to either capture or kill me. Did he turn around after he realised that they were outnumbered or did he never show up?

As soon as the thought hit me, a familiar scent floated in the breeze, I inhaled deeply. It was a scent I vowed never to forget. I looked in the direction from which it came and sure enough I saw Vance in human form emerging from the trees with four wolves flanking him. The best fighters that the Golden Creek Pack had.

"Well, hello there, Beautiful." He addressed me.
