The Death Cure // Book Preference.

(A/N: Obviously this is a book preference on The Death Cure by James Dashner, so if you haven't read/watched The Maze Runner, The Scorch Trials or read The Death Cure, then I strongly suggest you don't read this. All plot of these preferences is credited to James Dashner. Each preference includes scenes (sentence) quote throughout his work and credit for that, again, goes to James Dashner).

This book is a killer. Pun not intended. But hey, at least Janson dies...

Calum: "KILL ME!" // Calum trembled as an aching grew in his chest. A clarity filled Luke's eyes, almost a sense of familiarity as he stared back at him. The words Luke spat hurt even more than the sight of him, and for a split-second, Calum almost had the urge to run away again. "I can't go completely crazy in a few days. Of course I buggin' remember you." Calum stuttered. "Then why are you with them? Why are you out here?" His gaze shifted towards the Cranks, then back to Luke. "I don't know. But it comes and then it goes. I can't control myself anymore, never really know what I'm doing. It's like an itch in my brain that never goes away. It grows and it grows and it drives me insane. It makes me angry." The simplicity of Luke's words stirred something inside of Calum, a sense of fear forming in his gut as he stared back at his best friend. "Luke, come with me this time. Come with me and I can take you somewhere safer." The crazed body chuckled, but his eyes didn't match his smile. They stayed dark and gloomy, twitching in the light. "Get out of here, Cal. Get away from me." He shook his head, but the boy persisted. "Come with me, Luke. I can tie you up - anything! I won't let you hurt me." Luke's face hardened with anger and he spat his words out in a steaming rage. "Just shut up you shuck traitor! Didn't you read my note?" Calum's mind drifted back to the note he had read just a few days before. 'Kill me. If you've ever been my friend, kill me.' Calum gulped and looked down, refusing to say anything. "You can't do one last, lousy thing for me?"Luke scoffed at him. "You always have to be the hero, don't you? I hate you! I always hated you!" He doesn't mean it. Calum had to remind himself. It was just the Flare, it was making him sick in the head. "It was all your shuck fault! You had to keep trying - you had to save the world! Be a hero! You came to the Maze, and you never stopped. Gotta be the one people remember, don't you!?" A threatening yell came from behind Calum. Lawrence was in the van, aiming the gun towards Luke. "Don't do anything!" Calum yelled back, refusing to let his friend die in vain. "Luke, just listen to me. Give me a chance!" Calum begged, not knowing what else to do. Luke sighed, twitched his head before he spoke up. "Wanna know why I have this limp, do ya Calum? I tried to kill myself in the Maze. I jumped off those bloody walls and fell to ground. I hated the place, Calum. I hated every second. And it was all...your...fault!" Before Calum could respond, even register the pain that Luke was causing him, the deranged boy grabbed Calum by the hand and forced the gun upwards, aiming the barrel at his own skull. "Now make amends!" He yelled, the sound of lunacy ringing in his words. "Kill me! I trusted you with my note, not Ashton or Michael! You! No one else. Now do it!" He screamed. Calum tried to pull away, tried to push the boy off him, but he was too strong. "I can't, Luke. I can't do it!" Calum cried out, tears now falling down his face like a continuous avalanche of despair. "It's the only way I'll forgive you! Now, kill me you shuck coward! Prove that you can do the right thing! Take this pain away from me." Luke's words horrified Calum like none he had ever heard before. Calum's eyes went wide, his heart stopped in chest and he momentarily forgot how to breathe. "Luke, I can do something-" The boy screamed before he could finish his desperate attempts to save his friend. "Shut up! Just shut up! Do it, Calum! I'm not asking."

"I can't!"    "Do it, Cal!"   "No, I can't do this, Luke! Please don't make me do this!" How on earth could Luke ask him to do such a thing? How could he ask him to shoot him in the head? How could Calum possibly kill his best friend? Then Luke spoke such terrifying words, but they didn't scare him half as much as Calum expected them to. "Kill me, or I'll kill you. Kill me, you coward!"    "Luke..."    "Do it! Do it before I turn into one of them!"     "I..."

"KILL ME!" And then Luke's eyes cleared, as if he'd gained one last trembling gasp of sanity, and his voice softened. "Please, Calum. Please." With his heart falling into a black abyss, Calum pulled the trigger.
