23: And It Ends With A Bang...

"Fuck, it's cold," Dan commented as he banged the driver's door of the car shut. He actually liked wintertime and snow and all that shit, but when it was this freezing, sometimes he wished it was summer. It was always the same. During the summer months he wanted it to be winter, and at this time of year he wished the sun would have the balls to shine it's motherfucking face onto London. Fuck the rest of the world; as long as he wasn't going around with raw red knuckles and blue skin everything was okay.

Phil sat in the passenger seat on the lefthand side. His hair was perfect, as it always was, with his flawless fringe dyed the exact shade of black that Dan has wanted when he was sixteen. Oh well. At least his hair was not platinum blond or else then he would've dyed it the blackest shade of black that he could get his fingers on.

Dan turned on the car heating, shivering and wishing that Phil would lean in a little closer to him because hell, he was freezing his tits off in a non-moving car right now. But Phil switched on the radio, clouds of steam coming out of his mouth as he breathed. Halsey was playing and Phil grinned as he knew that Dan really liked this song, and Dan did. It reminded him of his ex-girlfriend from long ago; the girl that went to Paris with him and stayed with him for three whole years until they inevitably broke it off to go to university. Dan internally scolded himself as he started the car engine. This was no time for feeling nostalgic.

"My ghost, where'd you go," Phil sang, slightly out of tune but Dan didn't care. He liked when Phil sang, if he was honest. Dan grinned at his best friend and pulled away from the apartment block, turning up the heating to a) get rid of the persistent fog on the windscreen and b) to warm up his freezing body.

"I'm so tired," said Dan, and Phil glanced over at him to where he sat in the driver's seat. In fact, Dan looked physically tired. He had dark circles beneath his eyes and his face was sheet pale. Tired was an understatement. Dan looked exhausted, and Phil knew that he didn't look much better. "Can you imagine getting into a warm bed tonight and just falling asleep -"

"Stop that," Phil laughed. "You're making me want to fall asleep now."

The sky was beginning to get darker with each passing minute, and Dan noticed the other drivers around him were starting to switch on their headlights. It was Dan's favourite time of day; twilight. The sky was a dark violet colour and the moon glowed like a bowl of milk. It made him want to take out his iPhone and take photographs.

Suddenly, the tires skidded on an icy bend in the road and Phil's fingers wrapped around the door handle tightly, so tight that his knuckles turned white. Dan gasped and was careful not to touch the brake, because he knew that if he hit on the brake they would probably end up in a ditch. He could hear his heartbeat thundering in his ears.

They were okay. The wheels gripped the road again and they continued on their way to the book signing. A heavy layer of snow began to pelt down on them, and Dan was nearly positive that someone was out to kill them at this stage because with the snow coating the windscreen he could not see the road as well as he'd like to.

"Holy mother of sporks," Dan breathed as Phil typed up their status for Twitter. Dan wanted to see what he had tweeted, but he couldn't. Not when the weather and roads were this awful. This sort of thing required full concentration.

Phil tucked the phone away. "Just remember that we have to drive back home in this."

"I. Fucking. Know," Dan said through clenched teeth. Phil knew that he hated this sort of weather, and it was obvious that he was nervous driving in these conditions. "And it won't be we driving back home. It'll be me driving. Dan fucking Howell."

"I'll drive if you like -"

"No," Dan said sharply. "If we crash I want it to be my responsibility, not yours. I don't want you to take the blame."
