Chapter 5

“Wiley!  Wiley!”  Patrick yelled from his seat.

I walked over towards him and squatted down.  “Yeah Patty?”

“When is Momma gonna be here?  I haven’t seen her all day.”  He gave me his sad face, and of course it just made my heart melt.  I adored little kids, which is why my job fit me perfectly.  I was an instructor at a ski mountain and I taught kids between the ages of 4 and 6.

“I’m sure she’ll be here soon.  And I’m pretty sure I’ll be seeing you next weekend right?”

His face instantly brightened.  “Yuppers!”

I laughed at how easily his mood changes.  “Alright, well I have to leave.  Can I get a hug.”

He flung himself at me, making my topple over with both of us laughing.  Finally he let me go and I could get up.  “See you later Patty.”

“Bye-bye Wiley!”

I shook my head, still laughing.  He could say almost every other word fine, but he refused to say my name with an R.

I walked over to the main lodge where I knew I’d find Jackson sitting with his friends.

Sure enough, he was sitting at a table with 5 other guys all of them laughing.  I walked up and said hi, pulling up a chair to join the group.  All of them were juniors like Jackson, but they’d grown used to be joining in with them and treated me like a part of the group.

After half an hour of hanging with them we got up to leave.

“You need to take a day off and come skiing with us Riley.  It’s been forever since I’ve gotten to race you down the mountain.”

“You mean since I’ve gotten to beat you a$$ down the mountain?”

“Whatever,” he grumbled.  We all laughed, knowing I would beat him if we raced.  I was great at swerving around people and just bombing the mountain at the same time, so it didn’t matter how many people there were I always beat them.

Once in the car I leaned the seat back and closed my eyes.

“Long day?” Jackson asked.

“Yeah, I got like, 3 hours of sleep.”

“Oh, right.  What’d you do after you ran into the woods?”

“Just ran I guess,” I said shrugging.  I honestly didn’t remember much of what I did, especially in this exhausted state.

“Do you want me to come over and make dinner?”

I gave him a grateful smile.  “I’d love that.”
