Chapter 35

The first thing my mom had said to Mark, or more like screamed, was, “What the hell do you think you’re doing here!?!”

From there on there had been much more yelling, although most of it was done by my mom, who looked livid.  Mark was better at keeping his emotions under control, but I could still here the anger in his voice.

Right now he was trying to convince my mother I needed to come live with him.  I was surprised by this at first, but then thought it made sense.  I needed to be around people like myself and it’s not like my mom was ever home here.

“She’s not going anywhere with you!  She’s just fine here!”

“Just fine?  Have been paying any attention to your daughter for the past 5 months?”

“What is that supposed to mean?  Are you criticizing my parenting?!?”

“No Diane, but I am trying to get you to see that she’ll be better off with me and people who are like her.  She can’t do this on her own.”

My mother stopped for a moment, looking confused. “Do…” she paused again, trying to figure out what he’d meant.  Then she realized what he meant.  At least, she partially did.  “You… you told her!  How could you?  She didn’t need to know about any of that?”

This is where Mark sort of lost some of his control.  “Doesn’t need to know!?!  She’s been dealing with all of this on her own for months now, and it nearly killed her!”

“What the hell are you talking about Mark!?!”  my mother screamed at him, still not understanding.

“Mom,” I said in a clam voice, and her head whipped towards me.  “Mom, he’s saying that he didn’t have to tell me he can shift into a wolf, or that he was my biological father.  I already knew because I can shift too.”

Mu mothers jaw dropped, then she quickly closed it, but I could see panic in her eyes.  “Did you really think I wouldn’t be like him?” I asked her.

“I… I didn’t know if you would…”

“You should have told me about him,” I told her in a hard voice.

She looked at me desperately.  “Riley, there was no point!  To you, John was your father.  How could I ruin that?”

“If you hadn’t been so selfish, then maybe I would have gone through hell on my own for the past five months.”  My voice was still hard and filled with anger.

Tears started running down my mother’s face.  “I’m sorry Riley.  I… I made a mistake.  But honestly, I thought I was doing what was best for you.”

“Well, you didn’t do what was best.”  With that I turned away to the stairs.  Once I got there I turned my head back to look at her and say, “And by the way, I am going home with Mark.  That’s where I belong, and that’s where I’m going.”
