Chapter 18

I just stared up at him, but my vision started going blurry.  I was going to black out very, very soon.  And I had no idea what Jackson’s dad would do to me once I was passed out.

But a voice shouted from further in the house.  “Dad, what’s wrong? Why do you have the back door open?” Jackson asked.

Relief washed through me at the sound of his voice.  Jackson would help.  He’d make sure I was alright.

It was then that my body starting shifting back.  I suppose now that I knew I’d be safe, my body thought it would be okay to shift into my weaker human form.  Too bad that meant I’d end up naked on their back porch.

I heard Jackson shout, “Riley!”  But I couldn’t respond to it seeing as I was in mid-shift.

It turns out though that I didn’t have to worry about being naked on the porch, being Jackson, being smart and all, somehow managed to grab a blanket off the couch and wrapped me in in.

“Riley, what the hell happened to you?”

I tried to speak but only gurgles came out.  I started coughing and tasted blood in my mouth.

Jackson swore.  “We need to get you inside, out of the cold.  So I’m going to pick you up, okay?”

I couldn’t speak so I nodded.  When he lifted me up though, I barely held back a scream.  “I’m so sorry Riley,” he said as he walked me inside.

I think he set me down on there counter, but I couldn’t be sure.

“What the hell is going on Jackson,” a voice came from the back door.  It was Williams voice.

Jackson’s head shot up, and I could tell he didn’t know what to do.  “Dad… I can’t explain it right now.  But you’re a doctor, and Riley needs your help.”

I stopped focusing on their conversation, my vision going black once again.  When was the last time I took a breath?  I should probably do that… But when I did try I only sucked in blood and started to choke.

I felt hands on my body, moving me around checking for injuries.  I heard William say in a profession voice, “Her leg is torn to pieces and her back looks as if someone took a bite out of it…” If I hadn’t been in so much pain, I think I would have laughed at how correct he was.

“Jackson… she can’t heal from this.”

“Yes dad, she can.  You just saw she’s not… normal.  She heals fast, but we don’t know exactly how the whole healing thing works.  And I don’t know how long she’s been injured for… And why can she breathe?  Why is she coughing up blood?”

This time I heard confusion in William’s voice.  “I don’t know… the injury to her back shouldn’t be affecting her like this…”

I closed my eyes and tried to force out an explanation.  All the really came out was a gurgled, “shots.”

“Shots?” Jackson asked.  I nodded my head, still trying to breathe.  It wasn’t working so well.  “You mean you were shot?  Like with a gun?” he asked.  I nodded again.

“But there aren’t any bullet wounds…” William said, still sounding extremely confused.

“The wounds from where the bullets entered must have healed when she shifted, but the bullets are still inside causing problems.  We have to get them out.”
