Chapter 28

Riley’s point of view

I woke up in a small room, with Jackson sitting beside me.

“What’s going on?” I asked him.

“Oh thank God,” he said.  “I thought… never mind.  Some men broke into your house and want Mel.  Their meeting her somewhere, and I think that’s where they’re taking us now.”

“Why do they want Mel?”

Jackson didn’t answer right away.  “I think… I think they think that she’s a shifter, like you are.”

I shook my head.  “Who are they?”

“They’re like you Riley.  And I also think the leader, Carter, is the guy you fought with that one night, who kept trying to get back in town.”

I closed my eyes.  “Crap.”

I noticed then that my hands and feet were tied.  Just great.

“I need to shift, then I can get us out of here.”

“No,” Jackson said.  “There’s too many of them Riley.  You didn’t see all of them… nine broke into the room, but there’s more here in this house.  At least 30, you can’t fight them all.”

“Crap,” I said again.  The odds didn’t seem to be in our favor.

It was then five men walked into our already small room.

Since there was no way out, I decided to try and get some answers.  “So what do you guys want with Mel?”

One of the bigger men eyed me for a moment, as if by asking this question I was going to find a way to escape.  The he just shrugged his should and said, “Your friend is a very strong shifter.  Carter wants her.”

That last sentence registered in my brain and I suddenly felt queasy.  Did they think Mel was… me?  No, that’d be impossible.

“What do you mean by ‘Carter wants her’?” I asked.

“Like I said, she’s very strong.  Probably an Alpha… although she wasn’t born on the first of the month… Anyways he’s going to mate with her.”

I didn’t understand the first of the month part so I ignored it.  But at the word ‘mate’ the wolf part of me got excited.  The rest of me felt fear at his words though.

“What do you mean?  What does mating do?”

The man rolled his eyes at me but thankfully didn’t get annoyed with me.  “It means he’s going to forge a bond with her.  A bond she won’t be able to resist.  She’ll become part of the pack and will help Carter gain power over the other pacts once their children are old enough to fight with them.”

He said this all without emotion, but to me they sounded like they were filled with horror.  I felt sick.  Carter was going to force her into a bond and then have kids with her… oh god he really was crazy.

But Mel wasn’t even a shifter.  What would he do when he found out she was just a human.  Would he kill her?

I pushed those thoughts away and continued on with my questions.  I needed to know as much as possible if I was going to save my friends.
