Chapter 18: Control

Kaori pov
I gave a slow smile before setting my hand on sasuke's shoulder. He releases the ninja and looks at the ground.
"Go." He says.
The other sound ninja run forward and grab their companion before disappearing.
I could feel sasuke's muscles tense under my hand and watched in amazement as his marks began to recede. My own marks were not.
I felt a searing pain in my neck and looked at my arm through blurred eyes. No, the marks were not receding. They we're growing. I let out a moan through clenched teeth before sinking to the ground on my knees.
Most don't make it through this change, that's what makes it a curse. Soon it will devour your strength. Then your mind. What a pity little tiger.
I heard a familiar, creepy voice in my mind say.
"No...n..no"
I clinched my eyes shut and made fists in the dirt.
"Kaori...kaori, stay awake!" I felt myself being pulled into someones arms before everything went black.

Sasuke pov

Its like I'm looking at everything through a cloud. Its been this way ever since I woke up, full of power and purpose. This same cloud is covering my vision now as I cling to Kaori's twitching body. Not only are the marks inching their way all over her body, but they are also thickening, making her look bruised. I could see her eyes moving frantically under her eyelids, and I knew that she was struggling for her life. What is going on?
"Sakura..." I knew my voice was only a whisper. "Get me a wet cloth."
"But...sasuke.."
"Now!" I turned and glared at her until she ran to get the cloths.
I looked back at Kaori and see her lips moving. She let's out a low moan.
"Sasuke..." she whispers, her voice tight in pain.
"Shika...sasuke..." a tear streaks down her face. I can see her fingers start to twitch. The marks..they're shrinking.
Thank God.
After a few minutes her eyes squint open and I can see the blue trying return to them. The tears are streaming from her eyes in a constant flow.
"Sasuke...am i...did I make it?"
I nodded at her and she smiled and closed her eyes, her muscles relaxing. All the marks were gone and no scratches were on her body.
Thank God.

Kaori pov

I feel so weak. I can barely even remember the rush of power that I felt earlier. I can sit up on my own now and I'm gulping down water like a man whose been trapped in a desert.
"I guess this means I'm not as strong as you sasuke, huh?" I look over at him with a small smile, expecting an asshole like response. But all I get is silence. He's glaring at the ground with a water bottle clenched in my hand.
"Sakura. Naruto, stay here and watch the camp. Sasuke and I are going to find some food. Please don't be idiots." I glance back at sasuke and jerk my head towards the forest.
"Come on duckbutt times a wastin'." Even I can hear how false the cheer in my voice is.
Sasuke doesn't say anything and stalks into the forest
"I guess the honeymoon is over." I hear a lightly smug voice say behind me. I know that it's Sakura but I just can't find it in myself to care.
We walked deeper into the forest, spending long minutes in silence.
"What now?" My whisper sounds extremely loud after breaking the quiet. I don't receive an answer.
"I know..." I begin, but trail off because I can feel tears choking me up.
"I know that you're probably angry at me for some reason." He glances up at me in surprise before looking away.
"I know that you're an avenger, just like me." I can feel the words coming fast now. Things that need to be said.
"I know that you are strong. I know that you want more power. I know that you're considering going to that bastard snake to get it. and...and I know that if you go...if you go I will not follow you."
