Paige paced back and forth from dawn to dusk after hearing her parents' news. She couldn't imagine leaving her home behind. Moving, we're actually moving. The thought sang in her mind, taunting her.

She tucked hairs behind her ears that were coming loose from her ponytail. She wore an old track shirt from her middle school track team, which was worn from the years since.

"Paige, we need this. The business hasn't been kind lately." Her mother had said to her hours before.

Paige's parents owned a branch of hotels across the US and had just finished building a new one in California. Oakland, California to be exact. They lived in one of their most successful hotels, located in Dearborn, Michigan. Paige had been in tears already from the long night before, when they had told her they were moving to California.

The brunette sank down into the corner of the kitchen, clutching her leather-bound book. The kitchen wasn't very big, and it was one of few newly updated kitchens in the hotel. Paige listened for the familiar drip of the kitchen faucet, which her parents had always refused to fix.

"You in here, Pay?" Cole, her older brother, called. He walked into the kitchen and squatted down in front of her. She shook her head. When he didn't get a reply he said, "It's going to be all right. I know you've had it tough for awhile, but everything is going to be all right."

"No, Cole, it won't be, and talking about the nightmares isn't making it better." The nightmares; At the age of ten, Paige started getting nightmares about demons, werewolves, all the super natural creatures. She would be chased, clawed, and shot in her nightmares. She would scream and call out for her brother in the middle of the night. The strange thing about her nightmares was that they all ended the same way; The name PIVIK HOBIC would appear in some way at the end, and the same word would echo through her mind. She could never remember the word. It was as if her mind blocked her from it.

"I know." He sighed, "I just want you to feel safe, Pay. There's no meaning to them. If you let it go-"

"I can't let it go! The name...it has meaning Cole!"

"Pay, it doesn't. Just let it go."

Paige shook her head and sighed, "Whatever you say. I'm still not going to sleep tonight."

-

Paige and Cole woke up to the sound of their parents coming through the door yelling. Paige turned to Cole, but he had already begun to walk toward their bedroom door. She got out of bed and followed.

"I WOULD'VE GOTTEN RID OF THE NAME CARSTAIRS LONG AGO IF I COULD'VE! BUT THEY FORBIDDED ME, LENA!" Their dad yelled from the kitchen.

"I know! I'm not saying it's your fault. The Council shouldn't have even let Cecy do it." Footsteps progressed to the room, but before the siblings could move the door swung open. The door smacked Cole right in the forehead with a loud bang.

"Cole! I thought you two were going out toni-" Paige's mother began to speak, but she angrily cut it.

"That was before you decided to move us." Paige hissed. Her mother looked taken aback, but it was quickly covered. Their mom was not one who was taken off guard easily.

"Mom, who is Cecy?" Cole asked.

"What's 'The Council'?" Paige followed.

Their mother said nothing, but left the room with a slam of the door. The brother and sister looked at each other, their expressions half-worried, half-curious.

-

Paige had finished packing only an hour before they'd gotten on the plane. The ride was quiet. The family had barely exchanged a word since the night before. Even Paige and Cole, who could normally talk for hours without getting bored, were not speaking.

The plane ride felt like forever, but Paige made the most of it by writing in her leather-bound. She normally wrote in her journal when she was dying to get something that she saw or thought of on paper. No, don't say that word...dying, said the voice in the back of her head.
Paige sighed and leaned her head against the back of the chair. She didn't dare fall asleep though, she couldn't risk having a nightmare in public.

-

"Pay, are you asleep?" Cole whispered in through the darkness.

They had arrived and settled in Oakland around eight, but everyone was worn out and went straight to bed without dinner. Paige was wide awake on the bed, while her brother had chosen the recliner.

"Yes. I can't bring myself to sleep." She said turning over on her side, so that she could see him across the room. The room was larger than what they had before. There was a door that separated them from the rest on the hotel suite, and a large TV directly across from it. In the corner sat a leather recliner, and across from it a queen size bed was laid.

"How about we go for a walk?" He asked, sitting up slightly.

"Around the hotel? At this hour?"

"Well, yes." He got up and waited for her to join him. Paige slipped on her Michigan State slippers and followed.

-

The two walked the hotel for half an hour, memorizing the layout. They finally gave up for the night, and went to the elevator. Cole reached across Paige to press the button, 10th, when she moved and pressed 4th instead.

"Not this again, Paige." Her brother shot her a playful look.

"You betcha." Right when the elevator opened, she bolted. She ran along the twisted corridors until she knew Cole would not find her. She slumped against a door to look at her surroundings.

The light in this corridor flickered. Okay? Strange. This place was just built, her mind told her. Then something suddenly smelled of rotten eggs, and Paige shuddered.

"Hello." A voice said right behind Paige.

"Who's there?!" Paige demanded the girl, now in front of her, to give her an answer. The girl gave her a confused look.

"You can see me?"

"Of course I can! Wha- Why are you here? Are you a guest?"

"Not exactly."

Paige studied the girl's face, but her expression went quickly from confused to horrified. The smell of rotten eggs was stronger than before, and Paige could feel breath on her neck. Don't scream, she ordered herself, but when she turned around to a blood colored beast she screamed.
