Isis walked in front of Paige, escorting her to a large room. It appeared to be used as an office. There was a dark oak desk, designed to look older.

It reminded Paige of a 'teacher table' back in Elementary school. It wrapped around the entire room. A matching chair was seated behind it, engraved with floral patterns. And behind the chair, there was a large window with a view of California.

"Paige." Isis said. "I understand that you don't want to become a Shadowhunter, according to your brother. And I understand."

"You do?" Paige said with an eye roll. How could she possibly understand when she'd been stuck in this her entire life. "I just learned that a whole other world exists. Apparently, it's what killed my parents and is probably going to kill me one day."

The Shadowhunter nodded solemnly. "I do. I don't know how I would feel in your position, either. And I know how I felt when this happened to my parents."

"Did you find out what happened to them?" Isis gestured for Paige to sit on a bench that was placed in front of the large desk and against the opposite wall. She took her seat and Isis took hers behind the desk.

"Yes. I'm going to help you. We're going to help you, but I need you to promise me something. Can you do that?"

Paige tilted her head. "Hm. Depends."

"You can't let revenge consume you. You're going to find things out that you most likely don't want to know. You have to keep your head straight." Isis said.

"I will." The brunette said. And she meant it honestly.

Isis pulled out a laptop and inserted a flash drive. "Now, Institutes aren't supposed to have computers. But with Henry being in charge ninety percent of the time, we've broken a few rules."

"What exactly are you going to use that for?"

Isis typed away on the computer and pulled up a file.

Clave C Records

"If your parents did something to anger the demons, it'd be documented here. For example, raising them." Isis said in a logical tone.

Paige squinted at the screen. "Why would they keep track of every demon fight? Don't you guys kind of do that on a day-to-day basis?"

She nodded. "Well, yes. But to anger a demon, you usually have to raise one. If your parents raised one, the punishment would be documented."

"You think my parents would raise a demon? You guys are seriously insane."

Isis continued typing and clicking, ignoring Paige completely. Well, until-

"No. I know your parents raised a demon." She turned the screen towards Paige.

Paige looked at the document that was pulled up on the screen.

Lena Carstairs [Fairchild]

Crime: Raising

"It doesn't say what she raised." Paige mumbled.

"These documents have all been copied. So someone could've very well scratched it out or spilled something on it, before it had a chance to be copied."

Punishment: Exile

Consul: Dara Trueblood

"That's it. My mother was exiled for raising a demon?" Paige said irritated.

Isis shrugged. "I guess. That demon probably hired someone to kill your mother and your father got in the way."

"Demons...hiring people?" She said, not quite believing it all.

The Shadowhunter leaned back in her chair, looking at the screen. "The punishment of exile only comes from raising Greater demons."

"My mother wouldn't raise a demon without a reason."

Paige still didn't grasp any of this. Shadowhunters were unbelievable. She got up to leave.

"One more thing." Isis said. She continued after Paige turned around, "Henry is taking you to the hotel tomorrow. Maybe you can find something else there."

Paige thanked her and left. But she didn't feel like she'd found anything out. So her mother raised a demon, but why? What could her mother have possibly done to make a demon want to kill her?

No, there was something else that happened and it went way deeper than a little demon raising.
