Cole sat on the couch in the library. He sunk back into it. Not having much to do, he agreed to discuss the situation with the Shadowhunters.
"Can you tell us about your 'encounter' pretty boy?" Isabella finally asked him. She was pacing back and forth in front of him as if she really didn't want to be there.
"Paige and I were asleep in our room at our Dearborn hotel. My parents were out and about the hotel, which was pretty normal for them. Then they came bursting in having an argument about getting rid of our last name and that the Council shouldn't have let Cecy do it-"
Henry moved uncomfortably in his chair. Isis averted her eyes to him. She raised an eyebrow at him and he nodded his head.
"Should I continue?" Cole asked not caring much for the awkwardness. Everyone nodded, except Isabella who rolled her eyes.
"They didn't think we'd be home. We began to question our mom about what she meant, but she slammed the door in our faces. We road here on the plane in silence. We arrived around eight, and everyone went straight to bed. Paige and I couldn't sleep, so we went for a walk around our new hot-" Cole was cut off by Isabella.
"Wait. Why were you living in a hotel?" She asked.
"My parents own a branch of hotels." Cole replied and didn't seem to mind that she cut him off.
"Continue, Cole." Isis demanded.
"That's when Paige ran away from me. I couldn't find her anywhere on the floor, so I went back to the room. The hallway was covered in blood. I heard my mom scream," He did his best to keep his voice steady, "And my father chant words in some language I don't know-"
"He was probably praying to Raziel for protection." Henry said.
"Raziel?"
"Yeah. He's kinda the angel who started Shadowhunters."
"Anyways," Cole went on looking at Henry with a puzzled expression, "When I went in the room at last, my dad was dead in the arms of a demon. My mother was, um, disassembled. The other demon, not holding my dad, raised his hand and told me, 'I'll get you one day, little Nephilim.' Then they disappeared in a cloud of red dust."
"That's the same thing the demon we encountered told Paige. I thought it was to me, but now-" Isis said.
"You and Paige need to remain here. You're under the threat of another demon attack. We'll train you. And when you're ready, if you wish to leave, you may." Henry said in a final tone. Cole nodded, already knowing this.
"Henry-" Isabella began to protest. He shot his cousin a green-eyed glare.
"Your parents put me in charge while they're in Idris, Isabella. I call the shots, and besides, they're the ones who told me this." He replied. He turned away from them and walked out of the room.
-
"Why would my parents put him in charge?" Isabella said as the girls walked down the hallway.
"It's not that bad of a choice. He's eighteen. You know the law." Isis said.
"Those mundanes don't deserve to stay here." Isabella went on.
"Their parents were Shadowhunters!" She yelled without looking back at her.
"I don't know. Something seems a little warlocky about the girl to me." The auburn haired girl uttered.
"I don't think warlocky is a word." Isis mumbled.
They had been silent for a few minutes when Isabella suddenly stopped. "Do you remember that Silent Brother?" She said.
Isis sighed. "There's some many."
"But there was that one. He helped my mother out for awhile." Isabella said. Isis shrugged in response. "Well, I think he was a Carstairs." Isabella said.
"He very well could've been, but that doesn't necessarily count as them having family left. Once you're a Silent Brother, you're kind of always one."
Isabella rolled her eyes at the other girl. "I'm telling you something is off about that girl."
"Well, then don't look at her family. If something was different about her because of family, then it'd be the same for her brother."
She started walking again. "I guess you're right."
