The beast roared and swung for Paige's head. Before it could touch Paige, the girl, who she now realized was in all black, drove a knife into the creature's chest. Seraph blade, Her thoughts sang to her. The beast cried out in pain, and fell back.

"I shall have you one day, little Nephilim." It cried out before dissolving in a cloud of red dust.

"What? Who- how?" Paige turned to the girl.

"I'm Isis Herondale." The girl said and handed Paige a slip of paper. "You come to us if there's ever any trouble." At that, Isis ran down the hall and out of sight. Her dark brown hair swinging as she ran.

Moments later, Cole came running in horrified. The siblings looked at each other and said in unison, "You'll never believe what just happened."

-

Paige told Cole of her encounter with Isis, careful not to leave out any details. He had suggested they stay on the elevator, so they sat pressing every button but 10th. He shifted sitting positions every other second.

"Cole, why are you acting strange?" His little sister asked. He couldn't think of a way to tell her that blood-covered beasts just murdered their parents. It was a scene no one could ever forget if they'd seen it.

Cole had run back to their room. Only to find giant creatures, with pointed teeth and long talons, were killing his parents. His mother had already died and was shredded to pieces on her bed. One of the creatures had been holding his father, while he screamed words in a language Cole couldn't comprehend.

The creature, who didn't have his father in hand, had rushed him. Cole was saved just in time by a boy in black gear and shinny blades. The boy had been his height and had had hair as dark as the midnight sky. But when Cole had looked at him, he'd simply disappeared.

"Promise you'll stay calm, Pay?"

Cole had been Paige's best friend ever since the nightmares began. She was so afraid of someone finding out, that she wouldn't even go to anyone's house and spend the night. She couldn't even bare to tell their parents. Eventually she became detached from the people at school, and Cole became the last one she had left.

He'd thought everything she'd told him was paranoia up until tonight. She'd always talk about blood covered monsters and saviors that wore all black. She'd believed every single bit was real. And, after years of it all, he finally believed his not-so-insane sister.

"I promise." She said, her voice shaking. He wondered if she could since his fear. He'd been so careful since she was ten not to be afraid of anything, and now-

"I went back to the room, thinking you must've found some way back and tricked me. When I went back, I heard Mom screaming. Then Dad yelling things in some language. The hallway," Cole swallowed, "It- it was covered in blood, and this foul smell. I ran to the room as fast as I could, but it was too late. Mom and Dad were-" He stopped not able to bring himself to say the last thing. Dead.

"Gone? Missing?" Paige asked, refusing to except the fact that it was true. Cole didn't want to make it final, but he knew it was best to tell his little sister the truth.

"Mom and Dad are dead. Dead. Gone. Whoosh." He whispered to her.

"Who would do something like that?" She whispered back.

"I don't know. These blood-covered creatures were there and Mom and Dad's bed was stained with their blood. This guy had come and killed them, but he'd disappeared along with the creatures and the bodies."

-

By the time Paige and Cole had come out of the hotel, it was already light out. They'd snuck through the hotel carefully, and once they were out, the didn't dare look back.

"I know what to do." said Paige.

"You do?!" He gave her a baffled look.

"Give me your phone."

He fished in his pocket for his phone and gave it up. She went to Google Maps and typed in the address Isis had given her. A picture of a church pulled up. The building was huge and looked as if it had once been elegant, but now every window had wooden boards.

"It's just some church, Pay." Cole said breathing down her neck.

"Well, one weird thing must connect to the other. Maybe she knows what happened to our parents."

"It's worth a shot. We need to do whatever we can to figure this out. I'll go and-"

"'I'll go and you stay.' Oh no. That's not happening. I'm not risking getting attacked again. We need to stay together from now on."

"Fine."

-

They rode down the street twice. They missed the church the first time, as if it wasn't even there. Cole parked his car in front and walked with Paige to the front door.

The church was the complete opposite of what it had been in the pictures. It was the elegant, old-fashioned building Paige had imagined. Cole was starting up the wooden steps and gestured for her to follow.

"You knock." Paige told her brother.

"I was planning on it." Cole lifted his hand and banged on the door two times. They waited a moment, and then a girl with auburn hair opened the door.

"Hey, Isis. I think it's your mystery girl. Oh, and some guy." The girl called behind her.
