Chapter 2
This new development changed things. Pierce knowing who I was meant that he was a merman. Satisfied that we knew, I turned to look at Brooke. She smiled at me. She had worked it out too. I turned to look at Pierce this time. I could see the shock slowly fading from his face. I could practically see his mind racing.
After Pierce slowly recovered from his shock, I looked at him as asked with a slight smirk. “Wow Pierce, what’s wrong?” I asked.
“Nothing Marina. Nothing at all.” He said, attempting to smile. He failed miserably. I laughed, so did Broke. Yep, he definitely knew.
“Ok then… Well, we both told you our names, how about you tell us yours?” Broke asked, smirking.
“Um… No thanks, I’d rather not.” He said quietly.
“Not fair!” Brooke and I both yelled at the same time, causing several of the other patrons of the café to turn and give us strange looks.
“We had a deal!” Brooke said angrily, glaring at Pierce. Her glare could rival that of our waiter. Speaking of our waiter, he decided that was a good time to appear with our dessert menus. Perfect timing, not.
“What took you so long?” That was Pierce. “You left me here alone with these girls!” He said.
“Sorry sir. But here are your dessert menus.” He laughed at Pierce’s expression. He also started to walk back inside, but Pierce yelled for him to come back.
“Wait a minute!” He called. “Don’t leave me here with them alone!” He cried pointing to us. Brooke smiled.
“Who, us? Why we would never hurt a fly!” She put an innocent look on her face. I quickly copied her.
“Of course not! All we want is to pick a dessert from this amazing café to enjoy!” I said happily, although inside I was planning ways to make Pierce pay for cheating out on our deal. I was sure that Brooke was doing the same. What? Just because we’re acting innocent doesn’t mean we are! In fact we’re very far from it.
Pierce gave me a worried look and opened his dessert menu. ‘What’s he so worried about?’ I asked Brooke as I opened another connection between us.
‘I think that he’s worried about what we might do to him. Yeah, right.’ She replied.
‘No, of course we wouldn’t do anything to him. Not at all.’ I thought back.
‘Yeah, right.’ We both thought as we burst out laughing. Our waiter and Pierce looked very confused, the waiter much more that Pierce. It made sense, Pierce knew about mind communications after all.
“Oh, sorry.” I said out loud.
“Yeah, we’ve known each other so long that sometimes we do that.” Brooke agreed with me. The waiter shot us another shocked look for completing each other’s sentences. That’s not a mermaid thing, just a Brooke and Marina thing.
The waiter still looked skeptical but he nodded. “If you say so.” He looked pointedly to the dessert menus. “Well, are you going to order anything?” He asked rudely.
“Yeah, give us some time to look at it first.” Brooke said just as rude back. She grabbed a dessert menu and smiled innocently at Pierce. I copied her movements and looked at the menu I now held.
