Chapter 5

Mother pulled me through the halls of the castle quickly with her tail moving fast behind her.  My mother had an ugly puke colored green tail. At least, I always thought it was ugly.  We went through corridor after corridor.  The entire time, she ranted on and on about the fact that I didn’t tell her about Pierce before she went off on him.  I didn’t listen to a word she said though.  Instead, my mind couldn’t help but focus on the fact that I had to wear a dress.  I know, it sounds really stupid to be worried about it, but I was.  Everyone knew that I didn’t like dresses.  I hated the way they felt on my tail.  I always felt that it was going to get tangled up.  I’m on with wearing them on dry land without a tail, but not underwater.

Another thing I’m sure that you’re wondering is how we can wear clothes without them being all soaked and clingy.  That’s more of our mermaid magic at work, actually.  It keeps our hair and clothes dry, even though it keeps our tails wet and comfortable.  I’m not really sure how the magic works; I don’t listen in class very well.  It does keep us looking good, even though I’m not really one to try to make myself look good.  As I’ve said before, I may be a princess but I don’t have to try and act like one.  It’s just not me at all.

We finally reached the old wooden double doors that led the way into my bedroom, and my mother quickly threw them open as she reached them.  I noticed that she was trying to be extra dramatic about it, and I giggled silently.  That’s another great thing about living underwater; I can laugh and no one can hear me and find out about it!  The woman was much too dramatic for her own good.  At that moment, mother chose to turn around and glare at me, so I decided I should follow her inside.

I love my room, I decorated it myself, even though my mother tried to get me to let her do it.  The room was decorated with shiny, silvery furniture made entirely out of seashells.  My bed sheets were made of dyed blue kelp woven together into an intricate swirl pattern.  The walls were just shiny enough for me to use it as a mirror.  There were a few chairs scattered around the room that matched the bed spread.  There were windows all around the room that looked out onto the city below.  There was also a large balcony, also made of marble, that had furniture that matched my bedroom as well.  The opening to the balcony was covered with more of the blue dyed kelp.  There were also two more wooden doors in my room, one leading into my bathroom and another into my closet.  Don’t even ask about the bathroom thing, I’m so not going into detail about that right now.

‘Maids!’  My mother’s voice rang through my mind, and the minds of all of the maids in the castle as well.  Three of them swam into the room quickly.  I grimaced at the tone she used when calling for them.  ‘Get her dressed.  The dress I want her in is on the bed.  Fix her hair as well.’  She said snippily.  The maids quickly ran to do her bidding.  She turned to me.  ‘Do not give them any trouble.  Do you understand me?’

‘Yes mother.’  I said evenly.  She nodded and left the room, leaving me to the mercy of the maids, not like she would have helped anyway.  After she left, I turned to get a look at the dress that was spread out across my bed.  It was a bright purple color that you be a perfect contrast to my blue tail, I’ll admit.  It was tight at the top, but flared out into a princess style gown at the bottom.  There were also beads at the top which shimmered in the strange lights of the ocean.  Normally it wasn’t the kind of thing I wear, but it was really pretty so I couldn’t help but want to wear it.  It looked to me like for once, my mother had actually picked out a dress that was great for me.  Normally, she picked one that was really tight and a color that would completely clash with my tail.  I had to wonder why she had finally decided to get me a nice dress after all these years.  I couldn’t wonder for too long though, because the maids were wanting to dress me so mother wouldn’t ruin them in every way possible.  She does that you know, gets them fired and makes it impossible for them to work in the kingdom so they have to resort to unspeakable things.
