Chapter 7

My new dress was a sea-green color with the same shape and style as the one from before.  Again the color looked great with the blue of my tail and the part in my hair.  I had my silver tiara, which I seldom wore, placed gently on my head.  A maid had painted my nails the same sea-green color as my dress.  In fact, I had also been given a sparkling set of earrings, bracelet, and necklace.  They had the same cut of diamonds as the tiara, and they all sparkled nicely as the light dove through the ocean waves.

Brooke had come in my room to get ready as well.  She wore a sky blue dress that kept from clashing with her red hair.  Her hair was pulled back with a matching blue ribbon and curled.  She also had some very sparkly jewelry that matched her dress.  She looked fit to be the ‘Lady Brooke’ that she was.  Me on the other hand, I only looked like a princess because of the tiara on my head.

‘Your highness, it’s almost time for dinner.  Are you ladies ready?’  My maid asked us with a light curtsy.

‘Yeah, we’re pretty much done.’  I said slowly, dreading the impending dinner and ball.  I absolutely hate royal functions; they are always stuffy and boring.

‘Oh and your highness, your father wishes for you to see him in his study before you go down to dinner.’  The maid said with yet another curtsy.

‘Oh alright. Brooke, I’ll meet you in the dining hall soon.”  I said, going toward the door.  Brooke and I parted ways after that, she went toward the dining hall while I went the other way to my father’s study.  When I arrived, I knocked on the door loudly.

‘Come in Marina.’  My dad’s voice swam through my mind.  I slowly turned the knob and walked into the room.  My dad was sitting behind his desk and smiling at me.  It was the smile that worried me; I could always tell what he was thinking by the way he smiled.  The smile he currently wore was the fake one that didn’t quite reach his eyes.  It was the smile that informed me that I would be getting news that I wouldn’t like.

‘What is it bad?’  I said softly, walking further into the room.

‘You may want to sit down sweetheart.’  He said gently, avoiding my initial question.  I exhaled loudly and seated myself in front of his desk.  ‘You know that we invited the other royal family here to get our two families to become closer, and that’s true.  But that’s not the only reason that they’re here.’  I sat back against my seat, dread filling me.

‘So why else are they here?’  I asked after he failed to continue.  He took a deep breath and looked me directly in the eyes.

‘They are here to unite our ocean.’  He said softly.  How is their coming here going to unite the ocean?  The confusion must have shown openly on my face for my dad sighed.  ‘Marina, they are going to unite our kingdoms through marriage.’

I nodded dumbly.  ‘Who’s getting married?’

‘You are sweetheart.’

‘What?  I’m not getting married!  Who are you expecting me to marry?’  I exploded angrily, leaning back into the chair with a huff.

‘You’re going to be engaged to Pierce’s brother Tyson.  In fact, we plan to announce your engagement to him at the ball tonight.’  He said softly, trying to look into my eyes, but I wouldn’t meet his gaze.  I was enraged; how dare they plan for me to marry without my consent.  Princess or not, my father had always told me that I would be allowed to marry for love when the time came, not for power.  Now it seemed like he was the hypocrite.
