After the stunt with the pool, everybody had calmed down a bit. We sat back down on the rocks around the fire, me huddled into Luke's side trying to warm up. I was still too wet to put my clothes back on, but it was getting colder and colder.
Everyone laughed and talked, and I had a smile on my face the whole time.
After a while, Jack, Nathaniel, and I headed inside to change back into our clothes.
When I came back out, I headed back to my spot next to Luke but stopped in my tracks.
The girl with the long brown hair–I still didn't know her name–was in my spot next to Luke, her hand on his arm and laughing with him. I was a little upset, but I couldn't just demand that she move.
I turned around and headed back into the house, looking for something to eat. When I entered the kitchen, Jack was already inside, pouring some chips in a small bowl.
"Hey, you hungry?" He asked, motioning to the bag of chips.
I nodded my head absentmindedly before grabbing the bag to pour some of my own.
"Uh, I wanted to apologize." Started Jack.
I quirked an eyebrow up. "For what?"
"For kinda forcing you to go in the pool. It was just supposed to be fun and I–"
I cut him off with a laugh. "Jack, it's fine. It was fun anyway."
He let out a breath. "Thank god, I thought you might hate me."
"I could never hate you."
He smiled and slung his arm around my shoulders while we walked back out to the fire.
When we exited he house, me laughing at something Jack had said, I noticed Luke's eyes flit over to us before he furrowed his eyebrows and looked back to the girl who was still sitting in my spot.
I followed Jack over to where he was sitting with Alyssa and sat on the opposite side of him.
Alyssa saw me and eagerly started telling me a story about Jack from 6th grade, and I laughed so hard I was crying.
Numerous stories and tears of laughter later, it was eleven o'clock, and people began to get ready to leave.
I stood up from my spot next to Jack and stretched before looking over at Luke. We made eye contact and he nodded, understanding that it was time to go.
I hugged Jack and Alyssa goodbye before Luke announced that we were leaving. We both exchanged 'goodnight's with the others before heading out to Luke's truck.
"So," he asked as he pulled out of the driveway. "What did you think of your first California bonfire?"
"It was alright," I replied as I cranked up the heat. I was still I bit cold from jumping in the pool. "Met a lot of cool people. Do they all go to our school?"
