"Don't you think we should go back to class soon?" I asked Luke nervously as I wrung my hands together.
"Nah, Ms. Brown is so busy watching that movie nobody will even notice we're gone." He didn't even look at me as he spoke, just keeping his eyes on the hallway in front of us and the various room numbers.
"If you say so," I mumbled.
We kept walking through the empty halls, stopping every once in a while when we thought we heard someone coming. Even though Luke tried to seem cool and relaxed, I knew he was just as scared about getting caught as I was.
Finally, he seemed to find what he was looking for. "This is my aunt's classroom," he said, answering my silent question of where we were going. "Her class is on a field trip today, but I know she always leaves it unlocked."
He reached for the handle and, sure enough, the door slowly pulled open. Peeking inside, it looked just like all the other classes did. The chairs were stacked on top of the desk like we were told to do at the end of the day, and the board was wiped clean. The lights were off, making the classroom full of shadows, but the natural light from the windows was enough for us to see.
"What are we doing in here?" I asked, still confused.
He scoffed. "Whatever we want to do. Wouldn't you rather be in an empty classroom than watching that boring movie?"
"Well yeah, but I don't see what's so great about an empty classroom."
"We can do whatever we want in here and there's no parents or teachers to tell us not to."
I hummed in agreement and started walking around the room. I had never thought about what I'd do if I was alone in a classroom; it wasn't something I had really wanted to do. And now that it was happening, and I had no idea what the two of us would do.
"I have an idea!" He said from the opposite side of the room.
I walked over to him, curious as to what he had found. His body was hiding whatever he had in his hands, but as soon as I walked around the table I let out a laugh.
"Seriously? Paint markers?"
"Why not?" He asked, looking me in the eye. "Come on."
He tugged on my arm, pulling me towards the large mirror on one of the cabinet doors.
I watched him as he uncapped the black paint marker and drew a messy mustache on himself. I laughed before doing the same, but using a red one.
Pretty soon, both of our faces were covered in the paint. Luke had gone for the beard-and-mustache look, while I had draw lines like war paint.
I laughed as I watched Luke make faces in the mirror, sticking his tongue out between his teeth, his mouth wide open while his eyes crinkled at the corner.
For the last touch, I coated my lips in the paint before leaning in and placing a kiss on the mirror. When I pulled away, there was a smudge of paint left, much like lipstick would leave.
Luke looked at it for a couple seconds before looking back at me, a smile sneaking onto his lips.
