18 – A Visit from an Old Friend

After spending half an hour lying on the floor I got up and grabbed one of the Nova robes from the wardrobe. They were surprisingly comfortable and very roomy. I left my room making my way down the ever shining halls of the Nova building in search of the library.

I couldn't help but wonder if there are more places within Vasileios like small towns, something besides this building and the forest that stands behind it. The guards stand solemn outside the room in which the council members gather to discuss the issues facing my kind. It sounds strange saying my kind like we're any different than 'normal' people.

One of the guards from I met on Fools Night waves at me from the end of the corridor, I wave back walking over to him.

"You waved."

"Yes I did, Alexei Marinos requests your presence." Marco, the guard I met on Fools Night said in a more light-hearted tone than I would expected off a guard of the Nova.

"Alexei is here?" I said realising I just spoke my thoughts out loud.

"Yes, I can take you to him."

"That won't be necessary, just tell me where to go and I'll find him myself." I reply wrapping the robes around me, as there was a strange chill in the air making me feel uneasy.

"As you wish, just go down the hall and up the first flight of stairs then it's the fourth door on the left."

"Thanks Marco."

I begin to walk to the end of the hall but it soon breaks out into a run. I scamper up the stairs practically on all fours. I don't know why I was going so fast because it's not like Alexei and I were close. I guess I just needed some familiarity back into my life. I still remember the first day I saw him. I lay in the hospital bed looking at the strange man who was to become my guardian.

I wish I could go back to that. I wish I could go back to the time where were just talking about Greek mythology like it was just myth. I find the door, the fourth door on the left with Alexei Marinos engraved on the top in gold against the mahogany wood of the door. My hand shakes nervously as I reach out for the knob.

I twist it open to be welcomed by the light of a blazing fire. The room was everything I expected it to be. It was the carbon copy of the library back in Little Falls. Old, worn books and scraps of paper littered the desk. Book cases took the place of walls pouring out books from each inch of the room.

The fire was losing its roar and started to crackle, as if it was asking for more wood to feed itself. I scan the room and Alexei was nowhere to be seen. I walk up to the desk and take a look at the sheets of paper that adorned it. I see my name several times and the word exetasi along with some other stuff I don't understand.

"Found anything interesting?" I jumped at the sound of his voice dropping the papers I held in my hand.

"I wasn't really looking for anything in particular, anyway you wanted to see me. Why?"

"Take a seat." He said, as he tosses the block of wood into the fireplace.

I sink down in one of the plushy sofa chairs. "Why did you call me here? How did and when did you even get here?" I ramble, as the questions pouring out of my mouth like a gushing tap.

"You always seem to have a lot questions, Andromeda." He replied with a smile sitting in the chair opposite me.

He looked a lot more relaxed than the first time I saw him and this reflected heavily on his appearance. His hair was slicked back with a side part not a single hair was out of place. He wore a plain white shirt and black trousers with the Nova robes on top of it all.
