1 - Awakening

The apartment was surrounded by flashes of red and bright orange light with a tint of golden yellow. She stared into the flames, searching for her father. But there was no use as the smoke clouded her vision. Vermilion blood dripped down her porcelain skin, flowing right down to her cracked lips. The warm liquid tasted of salt and rust; it made her sick to the stomach. She felt herself giving in. It would be a whole lot easier than hanging on watching in pain. Yet she reached out yearning for the hope she would find her father's hand, but deep down she knew it was useless.

Fire burning, smoke filling what was left of the apartment, making it hard for her search for the one person who could make everything better. The blackened smoke filled her lungs, making it harder and harder to breathe. She saw a hooded figure in the distance, coming closer and closer towards her. She tried to push herself up but she had no energy in her. She could barely breathe let alone lift herself up and run away. The figure was now behind her, she let out a pitiful scream as the figure now dragged her away.

"NO!" I cried jumping out of the hospital bed setting off dozens of bleeps and blips.

Doctors and nurses came rushing in. They were all a blur to me, partly because I was still in a daze and because I needed my trusty glasses. I couldn't help but flop back down onto the bed jumping out of it had taken all of the little energy I had out of me. I looked to my left and here was a man stood behind the doctors and nurses. He had steaming hot cup of coffee in his hand. I could do with mocha right now, my head was pouding.

He was tall and lean, he had dark brown hair but in the sunlight it appeared a lighter shade of brown. There were bags under his eyes he looked as if he hadn't slept in days. He wore black pinstriped trousers with a white cotton shirt and a matching pinstripe blazer. He was immaculately dressed, right down to the well-polished black shoes.

I've never seen him before, why is he even here? Maybe he got the wrong room.

No don't be stupid Andie, he would have left already if he was in the wrong room.

"Miss Lister! Are you even listening?" Dr Surandon, his name I saw off his badge, said with a slight irritation in his voice.

"Sorry I was just wondering, what happened a-and why I'm here?"

"There was a fire at your apartment, the cause has not been found yet and you passed out due to the amount of smoke you inhaled."

"How long was I out for? And where is my father, is he okay?" I asked frantically.

"You were out for a day," he sighed, taking a long pause "I'm sorry about your father, but he didn't make it, we tried our best. But his injuries were too severe and there was nothing we could do. I'm sorry for your loss Miss Lister."

He didn't make it. He didn't make it. He didn't make it.

Those four words stuck in my mind. He couldn't. He wouldn't. He was a strong man the strongest I've ever known, he couldn't have died. Now I'm well and truly alone, aren't I?

"Ju-Just go!" I said choking out my words. I couldn't be seen crying in front of the others.

I hated it.

It made me feel vulnerable and weak. It made me feel like a child.

As soon as they left the room, the tears began to flow down my cheeks, eyes stinging, my breathing getting faster. Growing up without a mother was hard enough and now losing my father, it is going to slowly tear me to shreds. Why couldn't I have just died in the fire as well? At least I would be with my parents. Sadness, sorrow and anger. All these emotions it was too much. It's physically and mentally draining. My eyelids slowly shut, sending me asleep to relive the horror once more.

"Andromeda! Andromeda! Andromeda are you okay?!" A voice called out, full of concern, sounding scarily familiar.

I almost jumped out of the bed again. I woke up in a cold sweat. Ugh, I feel horrible, right now I could do with a hot shower, then a tub of Ben & Jerry's chocolate fudge brownie in front of the TV watching reruns of Friends, wrapped up in layers of warm, fluffy blankets.

It was the same nightmare. Well, memory bringing me back down to the harsh reality of what is to come and no matter how much I'll try to forget this is a memory that will never fade.

"I'm fine and it's Andie. Who are you anyway and what are you doing here?" I questioned him maybe it came out a bit snappy, but I didn't know him so I didn't have to be nice to him.

"I'm now your guardian now your father has sadly passed, I'm his brother, Alexei." He said holding his hand out, which I shook reluctantly.

"I recognise the name, he must have mentioned you once."

"Well I'm sure I can answer many of your unresolved questions. But that is an entirely different conversation, best saved for when we get you home."

"Where is 'home' and when do I get to get out of this hell hole? I hate hospitals they give me the creeps."

"Home is at my house in Little Falls, in New York. It's a nice city, very picturesque. The doctors said you can come home tomorrow after they run some tests and make sure you're okay."

"But what about all my things, I only came over to the states for a holiday, everything is back home in England. Look this is too much, I can handle moving up and down a country, me and dad used to do it all the time, but this is different. I'm not good at making friends, so bad I am home-schooled, do you r-"

I was cut off, "It will be fine, I promise all your things have been taken care of and you'll make plenty of friends, they all love the British accent over here. I've got to go now, but I'll be back tomorrow to pick you up." He smiled, and I couldn't help but force a small smile back.

I lay back down onto the hospital bed watching Alexei leave the room. He walked with grace like he was gliding across the floor. That's when it caught my eye, there was a ring on the table next to my bed. I picked it up inspecting the jewel encased in a silver band. It was an oval shaped diamond, the sunlight bounced off the gem. A note was tied to it with rope, it was from Alexei.

It read 'Everyone in our family has one of these rings and seeing as you are my family, you should have one for yourself. Alexei.'
