Chapter 5

The wind tangled through my hair, tossing it around wildly as I sat still on the picnic bench in the park. Austin stayed motionless, his hands folded in front of him. "So you wanted to talk?" I said, my voice cracking the vivid silence.

"Yeah," He muttered, "I'm just done."

"With what?" I asked. I was ready to hear whatever Austin had to say. I could tell he couldn't keep all of this bundled inside him much longer so he needed me. He stayed silent, his eyes shifting back and forth. "Austin, you can tell me. Who would I tell?"

He sighed heavily, squeezing his temples between his two hands. "It's not that I don't trust you...it's just...you'd look at my differently," He finished, taking in a breath of relief after he spoke.

"I wouldn't." That was the only response I could conjure up. I knew he didn't trust me fully. But, who could blame him? The kid has only known me for a few days. Though, it seems like he's known me forever considering he's already opened up to me.

"My parents," He spoke, his voice getting weaker. I grabbed his hands from across the table, gently stroking his palm with my thumb. He resumed, "My parents fight...a lot. My step-dad- he-he beats my mom sometimes and it's just hard for me to take sometimes. After my father died my mom got remarried. It started happening a while ago. Then, I got involved with the wrong kids and well, here I am," He finished, adding a nervous chuckle at the end.

"Austin-" I began, only to be interrupted by him angrily shaking my hands out of his. He stood up from the picnic table with an angry expression.

"Why did I just tell you that!?" He yelled. I repeated his motion and stood up, standing in front of him.

"Because you trust me," I responded, trying to sound calm so he would relax.

"Why should I trust you? It's not like I trust anyone else," He mumbled, sitting on top of the picnic table.

"Cause we're friends," I gleamed, sitting next to him, leaning my shoulder against his. He didn't respond until a few moments later, a smile appeared on his plump lips. "You have a nice smile."

He looked down at me, a questioning expression on his face. He didn't believe me. When he realized I was serious, his face turned a light shade of red. He looked away, turning his head in the opposite direction of me. I closed my eyes as I rested my weight on Austin. There were sounds of animals, just the quiet sound of rustling dead leaves and Austin's steady heartbeat. "Is Alex your boyfriend?" He asked, breaking the silence.

I almost began to laugh. "No!" I shouted, "What made you think that!?"

He laughed, "Well, just the way you guys are together. It just- I don't know- seemed like it."

"Well, we're best friends," I responded. He nodded slightly, his hazel eyes scanning the area around us. "Who's your girlfriend?" I asked.

A warm chuckle escaped his lips, "I don't date."

"I find that hard to believe."

"Nope. I don't even like girls."

"You're gay?"

His laughter filled the air around me as he leaned over, clutching his stomach. His cheek bones lifted, revealing his flawless smile. He took deep breaths, trying to catch his air again. "I'm not gay! I meant I just don't get," He paused, "crushes- as you would call them."

I giggled, "I highly doubt you've never liked a girl!" He shrugged warily. I pulled my phone out of the back of my pocket, checking the screen. 5:00. Already? I remembered I had to take Jacob to the fields. "Hey, I have to go. I have to take my brother to football practice."

He hopped off the picnic bench, his hands stuffed in his jean pockets. "Alright, see you," He said, before sulking away from me. I sighed and stepped off the table, beginning to walk home. "Oh, and Ali!" Austin shouted from behind me. I flicked my head around and Austin was jogging towards me. When he reached me, he sighed, "Thank you."

"No problem," I muttered. I leaned towards him, wrapping my arms around his neck. He hesitated, but slithered his arms around my waist, embracing it tightly. I could smell the thick coverage of Axe sprayed on his body as I dug my head into his shoulder. Eventually, he pulled away, his hazel eyes breifly locking with mine. "Bye," I smiled, waving. I stood still, a blank expression on his face, as if all his knowledge had been taken away from him.

"Bye, Ali," He muttered before turning and strolling off, his hood covering his head.

"Can I have my water bottle?" Jacob asked, almost yelling in my face, as he stood in front of me, sweat dripping down his bright red face. I handed him the water bottle which was sitting on the bleacher beside me. He took a few gulps before handing it back to me. "Thanks!" He shouted before running back onto the field to continue practicing.

The field full of boys who were sweating and panting. This is why I didn't enjoy being at the fields. I hated the atmosphere.

I kept my eyes locked on Robert. Beads of sweat dripped down his forehead as he was focused on the ball. Each one of them had serious talent. Next to Robert was Alex. Watching Alex practice was a whole other side of him. Something about football took away every soft emotion in him. When he played, he didn't focus on anything else. Personally, I found it amusing to watch. And next to Alex was...Tucker. Tucker wasn't focused today. He kept messing up and tripping. And maybe I was imagining it, but his glance has traveled over to me more than once tonight.

"Alright, practice is over," Coach Reed yelled. The boys sighed, their knees going weak. Jacob pranced over to me, grabbing the water bottle off the bleachers.

"Nice job, kiddo," I gleamed, rubbing my hand over the top of his damp head. "Ew, you're sweaty." He giggled before running over to one of the other boys. His name is Rylan- I think. I stood up, streching.

I looked down, grabbing my purse from beside me and swinging it over my shoulder. "Hey, Ali." I looked up from the ground. Tucker's warm hazel eyes greeted me accompanied by his smile.

"Oh, hey, Tucker. Good job today," I smiled.

He chuckled nervously, "Yeah, not really. Hey- uh- you wanna go- uh- get some ice cream?"

"Yeah, sure! Hold on," I ran across the room, heading towards Jacob, but I was stopped by Robert.

"Hey, Ali!" He exclaimed. To be honest, I was in a hurry to go get ice cream, so having a pity conversation with Robert wasn't my first priority.

"Oh, hey, Robert. Can you text me later or something cause I'm kind of in a hurry?" I spoke quickly.

He furrowed his eye brows, his smile slipping into a straight line. "Uh, yeah, sure. Where are you going?"

"I think I'm getting ice cream with Tucker," I responded, fighting the urge to blush.

Suddenly, all the shine was drained out of Robert's eyes as he stood, motionless, in front of me. "Well, have fun," He muttered.

I nodded and walked past him, not stopping to look back. I arrived in front of Jacob. "Hey, Jake. I'm getting ice cream with Tucker. Can you walk home with Alex? I'll be home soon," I informed him.

"Yeah, sure! Have fun," He smirked. I flashed him a smile before jogging back towards Tucker who was still standing in the same spot.

"We can go!" I exclaimed.

"Great!" He shouted before we both walked away beside eachother. As much as I wanted to be happy at that moment, I couldn't erase Robert's hurt face from my mind.
