Chapter 4
"Ali, I'm going to need you to take Jacob to football practice tonight," My mother said, taking a sip of her steaming coffee.
"Why?" I whined. Jacob had always been an amazing football player. He plays football with our local football league with Alex, Tucker, and Robert. I'd only been in there a few times and tonight, I didn't feel like going.
"Because your mother asked you to," My father spat back at me. I scooted my chair out from under me, standing up from the table.
"Whatever," I muttered before grabbing my backpack and heading out the front door. I walked down the sidewalk, crunching the fall leaves beneath my feet. The sun barely shone through the thick layer of gray clouds overhead.
"Morning," I heard a much too familiar voice greet me. I looked up, a smile crawling across my lips.
"Morning, AC," I greeted him, ruffling his hair. We began walking side by side towards the bus, just like every other morning.
"What'd I tell you about messing with my hair?" He said, trying to perfect his hair again.
I laughed, "Stop being such a girl! Anyways, guess where I have to go tonight..." He shrugged, most of his attention focused on his hair, not me. "the football fields."
"Why?" He asked.
"I have to take Jacob to practice," I responsed, rolling my eyes.
"Oh, come on, Ali. Robert will be there!" He smirked, hitting my shoulder. I covered my face with my hair, trying to hide my face which was now bright red. "Awh, somebody's blushing!"
"Shut it, Alex," I snapped. He chuckled proudly as we continued our walk to the bus.

"Today I am giving you the class period to work on your projects. So get with your partner and start working!" Our teacher accounced before retreating back to her desk. I looked across the room, locating Austin's desk. He seemed content with keeping his head down on his desk, so I decided to go over there.
"Hey," I muttered quietly while sitting down in the desk next to his. He lifted his head, rubbing his eyes. He was asleep.
"Oh, hey," He muttered, his voice still groggily from sleep. His voice, momentarily changed from sleep, made me want to melt right into his hands. Adding to the list of sexy aspects of Austin Mahone, his cologne was over-powering but irresistable.
"We're supposed to be working on the project so, let's get started," I informed him, opening up my textbook.
"Look," He began, catching my attention. I looked up from my book, to him. "I'm sorry about yesterday. My friends can be dumb and annoying," He finished, looking slightly embarrassed.
"Under-age drinking is wrong," I muttered, hoping my words would have some effect on him.
"Sometimes it's nice. It's an escape if you think about it. When you have problems, big problems, it takes stress away, you know?" He said in a hushed tone.
"Everyone has problems, Austin. You need to think of a smarter way to handle them," I replied.
"You act like you know me," He said in a more stern voice this time.
"You're right. Let's just get working, alright?" I snapped, my voice raising. It stayed silent for a few minutes.
"I'm sorry," He muttered, "I'm sorry I'm dumping this all on you. I just have no one else to talk to."
"What about your friends?"
"They don't care about me. I have no body to listen to me," He whispered, his voice almost cracking.
A wave of sympathy for Austin washed over me. Maybe he wasn't such a bad guy. He just needed to learn how to handle his problems. "After school, we'll walk to your place and we can hang out," I told him, cracking a genuine smile.
"I don't think you want to meet my parents," He muttered, his eyes shifting back and forth.
"Then we'll just go to the park. Deal?"
"Deal," He responded, letting his perfect smile finally strech across his face.

"You and Jacob wanna come over before we head to the fields?" Alex asked, dipping his french fry in some ketchup and dropping it into his mouth.
The cafeteria was crowded and noisy, making my head spin. I was sitting at my usual table: just me, Alex, and Robert. "I can't," I responded, taking a sip of my water.
"Why not?" Alex asked.
"I'm hanging out with Austin," I muttered.
"Austin Mahone?" Robert repeated his name, his eyes going wide. Yes, Austin's reputation was known all around the school. I nodded. "Why?" Robert asked.
"We're doing a project together and he's a pretty cool guy so we're just hanging out at the park," I responded, shrugging casually.
"Ali, you shouldn't hang out with him. He does bad things. I don't want him getting you into that kind of stuff," Alex said, obviously concerned for me.
"Thanks, Alex but don't worry, please. I'll be smart," I responded. Alex bit his lip but finally gave up. I scanned the cafeteria, noticing Austin walking in alone.
"They don't care about me. I have no body to listen to me," Austin's voice repeated in my head as I noticed him walking over to his "friend"'s table.
"Guys, I'm gonna bring Austin over here so be nice!" I warned them, scurrying away before they could object. I strolled towards Austin and he finally noticed me walking towards him.
"Hey, come sit with me," I said, grabbing his hand and leading him towards my table.
"I don't know if that's a good idea," He muttered but I ignored it, continuing dragging him to my destination. When we reached the table, the silence began to build.
"Alex, Robert, this is Austin. Austin, this is Alex and Robert," I introduced them as they gave little waves to eachother. I sat down, pulling Austin down next to me.
Austin stayed quiet, biting his lip nervously and looking down into his lap. I watched him carefully. Austin was perfect, flawless. When you looked at him, you couldn't spot a blemish or scar anywhere.
I looked away from Austin and towards Robert. Robert was a different kind of perfect. Sure, he had facial flaws, but that's what made him flawless. His brown eyes always had a slight sparkle to them and his lips stood proudly on his face.
Suddenly, his eyes locked with mine. I hadn't realized I'd been staring that long. A smirk crawled across his face. I smiled back.
"Well, this is awkward," Alex muttered.
