Chapter 19
Two days. Fourty-eight hours. Two thousand eight hundred eighty minutes. One hundred seventy-two thousand eight hundred seconds. Yeah, you get the message. For two days, I hadn't moved. There was no movitation, no purpose, for me to continue. I felt hopelessly lost. The fighting between my parents had siezed and the house had been quiet. The vivid silence only egged on my isolation from everything.
"Ali, come down here!" My mother's voice yelled from downstairs. I groaned, closing my eyes briefly. I wished I wasn't there. Not in my bed, not in my house, not in this country, not on this planet. Gone.
I pulled myself out of bed and made mindless steps towards my desk across the room. I opened my laptop and logged in. I went onto Facebook and noticed a large amount of notifications. I clicked them and noticed comments and wall posts from random people calling me a slut, whore, bitch. A few messages didn't bother me, but the more I got, it kept building up and building up inside me.
"You're a whore. Seriously. Go die. No one would care anyways," I read the message, letting each word sink deeply into my mind, scarring me. Why did I do that to myself? Unfortunately, I was letting myself be targets to them, and I was letting them convince me what they said was true. I was a whore.
I picked my phone up off desk and dialed Austin's number. I hadn't tried calling him since the incident but I was hoping he'd talk to me. I needed him now more than ever.
Beep...
Beep...
Beep...
Beep...
My hands jittered nervously as the tension inside me built. I felt the tears slowly building in my eyes.
"Hey, you've reached Austin. Leave a message," Austin's voicemail sang, his voice momentarily giving me comfort. But the brief serenity ended when the phone beeped, indicating me to start my message.
"Uh, hi, Austin. It's me, Ali. Look, I don't why you haven't tried talking to me considering what you told me the other day," I paused, letting out a muffled cry. "But whatever it is, I hope you are able to call me back because," another long pause, "I just feel so alone right now." My sobs became louder as I lost strength in my knees. "Please, just call me, Austin." I clicked the end button quickly.
I set my phone down carefully, breathing heavily, and turning back to my computer. I read one of my classmate's, Jessica's, status. It read: "So tired of Ali. Thought she was cool. Such a slut. Ugh."
I quickly brushed it off but as I began reading the comments, every ounce of self-esteem I had left was gone. Robert commented, "Tell me about it." And then, right under it, Alex commented, "Agreed. Jesus."
I brought my hand slowly to my mouth as I slammed my laptop shut, probably breaking it. I was crying harder, leaving puddles in my palms. Suddenly, my door burst open and my mom stood with a strict expression on her face. "Ali, I said- Ali!" She took quick steps towards me and tried wrapping her arms around me but to her dismay, I shook her off.
"I'm coming! Give me a minute!" I shouted back at her, wiping the tears out from under my eyes. She looked a bit taken back but listened to my demand. See, any good mother would stay to comfort their child. Then again, my mom isn't exactly a great parent.
I gathered myself and tried to look as if I hadn't been having a breakdown. I walked out of my room and down the steps. I entered the kitchen and noticed Jacob sitting at the table with his head in his hands. The closer I got to him, the clearer his soft cries became. "What happened?" I mumbled.
Jacob lifted his head, revealing his red tinted eyes. He took deep breaths, trying to get out his words. "Ask Mom and Dad." I nodded and walked out of the kitchen and into the living room where my parents were sitting a good distance from eachother on the couch.
"You called for me," I stated in a bored tone.
"Ali, your father and I have something to tell you," My mother spoke, standing up and taking gentle steps towards me. I passed her a disgusted glance, indicating her to go on. "Your father and I are getting a divorce."
"Wh-What?" I muttered.
"Yes. Of course, it will be better for you and Jacob because you won't have to hear us fight anymore," My mom spoke softly, as if it would calm me.
"Better!? You-you-you thought this would be better!?" I shouted, taking forceful paces closer to her. "We're supposed to be a family! I don't care if we're disfuntional but as long as I know someone loves me! And I know I always have someone to go to when I need it. I don't have that," I mumbled, "I don't have that anymore."
"Ali, what are you talking about?" My mother asked.
"We're not a family, in case you haven't noticed! My life has been a living hell and no one gives a damn about it even though you're my mother!" I yelled. I took a step back, calming myself down. "I'm done."
"What do you mean you're done?" My father asked, standing up.
"I'm done. Bye," I spoke calmly, rotating on my heels and rushing out of the house. I heard my name being shouted a few times behind me. Oh, so now they cared? Unbelievable. I hopped in the car, quickly turning on the ignition and heading to Austin's house.
~Austin's POV~
"Uh, hi, Austin. It's me, Ali." I gulped. I missed her voice. "Look, I don't why you haven't tried talking to me considering what you told me the other day," She paused, letting out a weak cry. She's crying? I want to talk to you, but I can't, Ali. "But whatever it is, I hope you are able to call me back because," she paused again, sniffing, "I just feel so alone right now." That's when I felt a pinch in the back of my eyes. I felt a single tear roll down my cheek and I quickly wiped it away. "Please, just-" I ended the voicemail quickly. I couldn't stand hearing her like that anymore.
After Ali left, my step-dad threatened me. He threatened to kill me if I talked to her again. Believe me, he would. And I know Ali would never be able to live with herself if I died for her even though, I willingly would.
Austin," My mother muttered. I looked up from my lap, watching as my mother took dainty steps into my room.
"Yeah?" I replied quickly, sniffing and wiping under my eyes.
"Austin, please don't cry," She whispered, sitting on the end of my bed and placing her hand on my knee. "I know how you feel about her but it's better this way, you know that. Ali will get hurt. You don't want that, do you?" I shook my head. "Right. Ali brought you something very special when she came into your life. She brought you that smile on your face that I love so much." I grinned. "But it's time for you to realize that she's better off without you. You're doing the right thing."
"That's hard to believe," I muttered. Suddenly, there was a soft knock on the door. I jumped off my bed and ran towards the window, taking a peek out into the driveway. "It's Ali!" I shouted, identifying her car. I shot my eyes at my mom.
"Go talk to her but rememeber, do what's best for her," My mom instructed me. I nodded and walked out of the room.
