Chapter 7

I didn't even bother to look up. I could feel their eyes burning a hole through me. I stood there, shivering, my clothes dripping in lake water. "Ali, what made you think you could just leave your little brother here?" My mom snapped, her arms crossed over her chest.

"It wasn't that big of a deal. I was just at the lake with Robert," I responded, slightly rolling my eyes.

"It is a big deal, Ali! You disobeyed us!" My father shouted, taking a step closer to me. I stood, motionless, not caring about what they said.

"I'm leaving. I'll be home soon," I announced as I turned around, heading for the front door without glancing back. I slammed the door, hoping it would help get my point across that I was pissed.

It probably worked.

I stuffed my hands in my pockets, walking down the sidewalk with one destination in mind. Austin Mahone's house. I'd heard rumors about where he lived. A bad neighborhood on the other side of town. Then again, I'd heard a lot of things about Austin that didn't seem to be true at this point. It was dark- more like pitch black.

I continued walking, jumping every once and while when I heard a slight noise. I felt paranoid. Eh, maybe, I was.

After a half of hour of endless walking, I entered Austin's neighborhood. I looked for the car I'd seen Austin get into a few times in the school parking lot. Finally, I located it. It was pulled into a small un-paved driveway that belonged to a plain, rugged, small house. It looked the same as the others in the area and about the same size. All had only one floor. I approached the driveway nervously, hoping he'd allow me in. I passed by the car, slightly running my fingers against the peeling paint.

I stood in front of the door, debating wheather it was worth it or not. Screw it. My hand knocked on the door a couple of times before it was pulled open. Austin stood there, with basketball shorts on and no shirt, with a confused look on his face.

"Ali?" I nodded. "What are you doing here?" He asked, taking a bite of the cookie he was holding.

"Just came to hang out," I responded, adding a nervous chuckle to the end.

He laughed, "How did you find out where I lived?"

"I heard rumors."

He sighed, "Uh, well, you can come in, I guess..." He stepped aside, motioning for me to come in. I entered, scanning the house up and down. The walls were plain, painted with beige. The living room had small TV and a tan couch.

"Austin, who's here!?" A female voice yelled from around the corner.

"My friend!" Austin shouted back, "That's my mom. She was just making cookies." He smiled cheekily, shoving the last bit of cookie in his mouth.

"Bring him in! He can have a cookie!" His mother yelled. Him? Oh, God, this is going to be a surprise for her. My face got hot and Austin chuckled quietly. Austin grabbed my hand, leading me into the small kitchen. The over-whelming aroma of chocolate-chip cookies washed over me. A woman, her worn-out brown hair pulled into a messy bun, was pulling a batch of cookies out of the oven.

She looked up from her cookies and her eyes locked on me. She looked confused but then she smiled wearily. She was beautiful. "Hi, I'm Mrs. Mahone, but you can call me Michele. And you are?" She asked, holding her hand out in front of me.

"I'm Ali," I responded, taking her hand and shaking it, adding a warm smile.

"You're very beautiful. Don't you think, Austin?" His mother asked, smiling at me. Austin turned his head away. His mother laid a hand on my shoulder. "Austin's just shy around girls he likes," She winked, "Isn't that right, Austypoo?"

Austin looked up, revealing his tomato red cheeks. He glared at his mom, opening his lips to speak. "No," He responded simply. I giggled along with Michele who adjusted her apron before turning back to her cooking..

"Austin, where's the bathroom?" I asked. He looked at me before pointing down the hall. "Thanks." I strolled down the hallway, turning into the bathroom.

After doing my business, I walked out, stopping in the hallway before entering back into the kitchen. "So she's not your girlfriend?" Michele said, obviously smirking. I blushed. Eavesdropping is wrong but who cares.

"No! Stop talking about it!" Austin shouted.

"Haven't you ever thought about getting a girlfriend? I'd love to have Ali around!" Michele gleamed.

"Nope and I don't plan on it," Austin responded. I rolled my eyes. He was beyond stubborn. I walked back into the kitchen and they both immediantly went quiet. "Well, Ali, let's go."

Austin got up, walking past me, implying I should follow him. And I did. We walked past the bathroom and into a small bedroom with clothes thrown all over the room. "Is this your room?" I asked. He nodded, picking up the various pairs of boxers around the room. "You should really clean up."

He laughed, "You sound like my mom."

"Your mom's nice," I smiled.

"Yeah, I love her," Austin exclaimed. Suddenly, Austin's mother screamed. Austin snapped his head up, his eyes turning dark. He raced over to the door, shutting and locking it.

"Austin, what are you doing!? Your mom just screamed! She needs our help!" I yelled, heading for the door. Austin grabbed my arm, yanking me back.

"You don't understand, Ali. Don't!" He yelled back, his eyes pleading for me to listen. Then, I heard glass break.

"I don't understand," I muttered.

"Just believe me. You don't want to go out there," Austin mumbled, looking somewhat ashamed of himself. "My step-dad's home."

Everything in my brain begun to come together, like connect the dots. "Is-is-is he hurting your Mom?" I whispered. Austin bit his lip and nodded slightly. "We have to help her!"

"He's drunk. He won't mind giving you a couple scars if you go out there," Austin stated, as if this happened to him everyday. Did it? Maybe I didn't understand him as much as I thought I did. I grabbed his hands, pulling him close to me, wrapping my arms around his neck.

I tried drowning out the screaming. I focused on Austin. His smell. His touch. His tears which were now seeping through my shirt. I pulled away, looking at him. "Who thought the Austin Mahone could cry?" I said, smiling at him.

He laughed, wiping his eyes. He walked away, rolling into his bed, pulling the covers up to his chin, closing his eyes tightly. I followed him, laying down in his bed next to him. I wrapped my arms around his waist, burying my head into his chest as his breathing started to go back to a normal pace. "Thank you, Ali," He whispered.
