Chapter 8

I woke up, my eyes acknowledging the unfamiliar place. I immediately panicked. I tried to sit up but I found a pair of arms restricting me. Austin Mahone's.

Images from last night flooded my brain as I escaped his grip and stood up in his bedroom. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and checked the time. After noon. Damn. My parents were going to murder me. How was I supposed to tell them that I slept over at a kid's house who's known for doing drugs and drinking all the time and not get in trouble? Oh, right, I couldn't. They wouldn't even give me a chance to explain what really happened. Why I didn't leave.

I looked down at Austin, examining his flawless features as he slept peacefully. I decided not to wake him. I opened his bedroom door carefully, stepping out into the hallway gingerly. Remembering what happened last night, I didn't want to run into Austin's step-dad. I wandered through the hallways and into the kitchen.

I had to hold a hand over my mouth to keep from gasping. There were broken dishes all over the floor. Glass was scattered every where, not leaving much space to walk. Mrs. Mahone was sitting at the kitchen table, asleep. She had cuts and bruises covering her arms. She didn't deserve this. Then again, no one did.

I stepped towards her, a few pieces of glass shattering under my step. I shook her shoulder lightly and she brought her head up, revealing her hurt and tired face. "Michele, are you alright?" I whispered. She didn't answer but instead scooted her chair out and flung her arms around me, hugging me tightly.

"Thank you," She whispered. I knew she was crying. I could feel her tears seeping in through my shirt.

"For what?" I asked, returning the embrace.

"For helping Austin through this. He really needs a good friend right now. You know," She paused, "I assumed you left last night but after everything was over, I went in there to check on Austin and you were still there. And Austin had a smile on his face. Ali, he hasn't slept with a smile on his face in years. Thank you."

"Well, you're welcome. Austin deserves a good fried," I responded as she escaped our embrace, a smile now replacing her frown.

"Well, I think he's got the hots for you," She smirked, hitting my shoulder lightly. I couldn't help but blush even though she used the term "hots". I didn't respond. I guess I had nothing to say. I think I'd be kidding myself to try to deny that I had feelings for Austin. Cause I did. Mrs. Mahone put her hand in my shoulder. "You're always welcome here, Ali."

"Thank you."

"You don't understand," I muttered. I could feel myself getting weaker as the urge to cry got stronger. Only hours ago, I felt safe and at home. Except, I wasn't at my house.

"What don't we understand, Ali? First, you leave your brother alone at home and go swimming in the cold and then you sleepover, without asking us, at some random boy's house!" My mother shouted, her eyes boiling with anger.

"His name is Austin Mahone," I muttered.

"I don't care what his name is!" She screeched.

"You're not allowed to see that boy anymore. If we catch you near him, there will be serious consequences," My father stated, proudly. How could someone be proud to say that?

"What?" I whispered, my bottom lip quivering.

"You heard us. Now, you can go, Ali." My mother and father both kept their arms crossed over their chest. I searched for some kind of genius response in my head that would change their mind. I couldn't find one. So I did the only thing I could think of: I just ran. I ran to my room, slamming my foot down on every stair as I went.
